Breaking news has come in tonight that Japan’s iconic Toho Studios, home of the original Godzilla film in 1954 and every film in the series since then are prepping their first Big G film in 12 years. The Japanese studio is saying there is a huge resurgence of Godzilla in that country since Legendary Pictures’ and Gareth Edwards American Godzilla film was such a hit.
Toho is producing a new work of its iconic film monster Godzilla for release throughout Japan in 2016. It will be the first Godzilla film by Toho since 2004’s Godzilla Final Wars.
Production of the new film will run from summer to fall of next year, and Toho is assembling the staff. It will have no direct ties with Edwards’ film, but will instead be an entirely new Godzilla film. Edwards and Legendary Pictures are separately planning a sequel to their own film.
Toho proclaimed, “The time has come to make a film that will not bow down to the Hollywood film,” thanks to a combination of rapidly improving filmmaking techniques and know-how developed over the years in Japan.
Sources say that Toho is deciding on whether the effects for the new film will be the traditional man-in-a-suit technology or possibly digital CGI technology for Godzilla.
Toho is also developing an organization to discuss the strategy of future Godzilla projects called “Godzi-con.” It is currently comprised of Toho staff members but would consider adding other businesses to explore new film possibilities.
Personally, I would love to see Godzilla back in the hands of the studio that created him and see what they can do with today’s technology. Only time will tell.
