Scream 4 commentary reveals that Kirby (played by Hayden Panettiere) was still alive, though critically wounded, at the end of the movie. David Arquette is on board should there be another movie and Neve Campbell says, “We’ll see.” Harvey Weinstein, executive producer on all four features, is urging his brother to do a fifth film. Scream 4 was written as the first film in a new trilogy. So, what’s the hold up? Where’s Scream 5 and 6?

Well, according to Scream 1,2,4 writer Kevin Williamson – the problem is that there isn’t a studio willing to option the scripts yet. Recently, Williamson was speaking at the 2014 Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour when he was asked about the iconic slasher film franchise. He’s quoted as saying:

“It’s weird. When I pitched Scream 4, I pitched Scream 4, 5, and 6. I pitched a whole new trilogy. I guess Scream 4 never took off in a way they hoped. It’s all in here, [my head] and my computer if they ever want to buy it from me.”

Whether it’s Outerbanks Entertainment, Corvus Corax Productions, or Prime Focus – the production companies that produced Scream 4 – holding out on the continuation of the new trilogy, we’ll never know. I doubt The Weinstein Co. are the ones holding out, especially since they’ve been so vocal about continuing on with at least Scream 5.

“Scream: The TV Series” is currently awaiting a full season pick up after a pilot was filmed for MTV in June. The television adaption will follow brand new characters suffering the consequences after a YouTube video goes viral.

All of this renewed interest in the Scream franchise has writers, producers, and now thee director talking. Many critics have blasted the chance of another Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson collaboration after a rumored fallout between masterminds. It was very public, right after the launch of Scream 4, but no one ever commented on the validity of the rumors. Well, a brief exchange on Twitter may put the rumors to rest and reignite fans’ desires for the two to join forces again with Scream 5.
