Farewell, FEARnet.

As of July 30th, 2014, FEARnet will be bidding the world of horror goodbye.

The network was purchased by Comcast and NBCUniversal in April. The parent companies already own SyFy Channel and Chiller TV, so they didn’t find it necessary to have a third channel dedicated to the horror genre. Yet, I’m sure they have 5+ networks devoted to dramas and reality television…but I digress.

FEARnet came to prominence in October of 2006 and quickly became a leading source in horror film broadcast and, through its website representation, a leading source in horror journalism. I can remember watching the channel during its first few weeks; it’s the place where I first discovered the Sleepaway Camp sequels. I had an account with the website and was a religious reader until I started working here at HorrorSociety.com.

FEARnet’s website has over 270,000 subscribers and the television network became so popular that it started producing its own content as seen with Adam Green’s “Holliston.”

In a world where horror and science fiction are the ugly stepchildren of the film industry, it’s a sad day to see any horror source close its doors. Sure, we may be competing websites, but I respect everyone over at FEARnet for the amazing job they’ve done over the last eight years. I’d like to wish everyone there good luck and bid them a genuine, fond farewell.
