Villanelle Review

I’ll be honest, going into this I had no idea what to expect from this movie, but I kinda liked not knowing, because it allowed me to go into this film without any sort of bias or expectation, which is a rare thing for me. The opening sequence really drew me in though. (The ‘Batman’-esque voice threw me off at first, but again I had no idea what, or who’s voice that even was)

I like that this movie actually makes you think. The entire time I was watching I was never quite sure about what was happening, but not in a bad confusing way. The story pulls you in, but doesn’t outright tell you what’s going on, so you spend the entirety of the film trying to figure things out, and I loved it. The best example of this being Dawn. It’s never said outright that she is a vampire, they just hint at it, and let the audience put the pieces together.

This movie has a subtle “artsy” feel to it. (Not in the cheesy way) I really liked the use of sound in the film, from all the old timey music used throughout the film, to the use of accentuated background noises like the crow and the crackling of the fire. And there was also the use of poetry throughout the film. (I’m a sucker for good poetry)

I really enjoyed Dawn’s character, she was a total badass! I loved the first scene between her and the chief, it had an almost film noir feel to it, the chief being the seasoned cop and Dawn being the beautiful yet deceptively deadly vixen in distress. The other character I really enjoyed was the killer himself. (I call him Mr poet killer man) He was exceptionally creepy, and kind of cute. (Hey, I told you I’m a sucker for poetry) I loved/hated that it never actually explained why he did what he did, but the showdown between him and Dawn was epic.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed this film. It kept me interested and it kept me guessing, which is unusual these days. Finally a new spin on the vampire flick, and these guys nailed it.
