The Dead Place, set to release Halloween 2023, was inspired by a true-life supernatural encounter experienced by writer, director, and creator Michael Pickle while visiting a “haunted” abandoned asylum in 2008. After years of being a student of the genre with his own horror podcast, several short films, a successful horror variety series, and his first feature film PAY UP coming February 1 st from Scream Team Releasing, Michael has assembled a phenomenal team of passionate filmmakers and artists to make the project a reality.
The talent on The Dead Place team has been drawn to the power and quality of the script, which revolves around a young man named Isaac who struggles to be understood because of his ability to see ghosts. While disruptive to his life, Isaachas kept his ability mostly in check. However, the death of a family member, coupled with taunting at school and the arrival of a powerful new entity that has taken a fascination with Isaac, he is placed on a path of madness, mayhem, and tragedy. The villain who is determined to possess Isaac for his own nefarious ends, known only as The New Kid, will be played by none other than Cult horror star David Howard Thornton. A departure from his famous Art the Clown character, The New Kid is highly talkative and deviously witty.
The cast is rounded out by an impressive collection of horror veterans and rising stars, including Suziey Block (Horror in the High Desert), Nick Theurer (Slapface), Lexi Dali (Cop Car), Eliot (Stand and Deliver), Angel Bradford (The House That Eats Flesh), and starring Idris Veliu (Power) as Isaac.
Michael Pickle’s creative team is headed up by his long-time collaborator James Rivera. Alongside Michael, James was instrumental in the creation of Pickle’s
Horror Show, a highly successful horror variety program that draws in millions of dedicated viewers (4 million in the first year). He has also enlisted the aid of co- producers Steve Deering and Nick Theurer. Both Steve and Nick are respected creators in the genre space with impressive credits behind their names. Steve Deering served as creative consultant on films like Neon Demon, Darkest Hour, John Wick, Moonlight, and Hotel Artemis. Nick Theurer served as a producer on the hit TV series The Bay and co-produced genre hit Slapface, which he also acted in. Nick also appeared in Michael’s horror variety series and is the co-star of his upcoming feature film Pay Up.
A Seed & Spark crowdfunding campaign run by Michael’s creative team will be raising the funds for production and launches October 4 th with what is sure to be a fun and interesting campaign through the Halloween season. The project is being driven primarily by passion on all sides of the team, and with the help of an equally passionate horror audience, this ambitious indie project is highly achievable. Stretch goals will be included that can better serve both the production and the fans who choose to support it.
Even more exciting is the fact that “The Dead Place” is intended as the first installment of an ongoing trilogy. Michael and his team are about to embark upon a years-long journey and execute the full saga of Isaac, his best friend Katharine, and the malevolent New Kid. The intention is to build a fan base through the campaign and prove themselves with an intense and engaging first film, then use the insight, input, and feedback of the audience as the trilogy is shaped and brought to life.
Beyond all the horror and bloodshed that includes all practical FX, brutal kills, and grotesque deformed demons; there are some large, topical ideas being explored within “The Dead Place.” Bullying, mental health, and other social issues are organically woven throughout the plot, providing some unexpected substance to the fun and gory horror project.
“The story of The Dead Place launched my filmmaking career and has been living in my head for almost 15 years. After all I’ve learned, I knew the only way to make the film match the vision in my head was to bring horror fans along for the ride. After all, I’m making it for them, and I can’t wait to show them and the world what our team is capable of.” – Michael Pickle, Writer/Director of The Dead Place.

I can’t wait for everyone to see David Howard Thornton as this very talkative and sadistic villain. The crowdfunding campaign is now live on INDIEGOGO and doing well. 10% funded in the first 2 days.
Thanks for sharing! Don’t forget to please add Jake Diaz as John Jr under rising star!
