Review: Gerardo Chierchia’s GAME OF GROANS

I’m starting to see a certain style developing when Gerardo Chierchia and David Black work together. Whatever they create is usually kind of crazy and absolutely balls to the walls (this time literally). In their new short film, a trio of game players find themselves in the grips of a vicious girl gang known as Lucifer’s Ladies. What will happen when three middle aged dudes battle it out with three sexy leather-clad ladies? Written by David Black and produced by Gerardo Chierchia, Game of Groans stars Anastasia C. Kouloukas, David Black, Melanie Kuhn, Glen Cook, Grace Liu and Brett Sixtysix.

Game of Groans features cinematography and editing by Gerardo Chierchia, and it was produced by David Black. My only gripe with production is directed at the actors and the crew. I thought some of the action sequences could have been much better, even for an independent 16-minute short in the same vein as Monty Python. Other than that, the picture quality looks great for remote viewing and the audio was superb. The timing is on point and the actors really look like they were enjoying their time on set. Let me not forget to mention the awesome location where Game of Groans was filmed!

Game of Groans encompasses a lot of different things in a small amount of time. It’s a horror thriller and an erotic comedy at the same time. It’s cringy, wacky and weird but also oddly enjoyable. Lucifer’s Ladies looked more fun than frightening, but I enjoyed watching them develop their shenanigans. Game of Groans won’t be for everyone, but cinema viewers who look for the “what the hell did I just watch?” feeling will get a kick out of it. I’ve included a link to the video below, and you should buckle your seatbelts and bootstraps for this bizarre adventure. Final Score: 6 out of 10.
