Hellboy (2004)

In the final days of World War II, the Nazis attempt to use black magic to aid their dying cause. The Allies raid the camp where the ceremony is taking place, but not before a demon – Hellboy – has already been conjured. Joining the allied forces, Hellboy eventually grows to adulthood, serving the cause of good rather than evil.

Hellboy stars:

Ron Pearlman = Hellboy

Doug Jones = Abe Sapien

Selma Blair = Liz Sherman

John Hurt = Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm

Rupert Evans = John Myers

Karel Roden = Grigori Rasputin

Jeffrey Tambor = Tom Manning

Scotland 1944 – a rainy night and the allies invade a Nazis encampment. Grigori Rasputin opens a portal to the other side to awaken a god of chaos for the German forces, but the allied forces attack destroying the portal, taking Grigori within, and what was left behind…Hellboy.

Years later,  John Myers shows up at the Bureau of Paranormal Research and  Defense to work with Hellboy and his very special team.

Before John can settle in,  Hellboy is called out on a very unusual mission and John is ordered to go with him. When John tries to help, Hellboy doesn’t appreciate the help too much. After defeating “stinky”, Hellboy goes to visit Liz, his true love.

Liz is in a mental hospital trying to hide from the outside world and her gifts. Although she doesn’t like it, she tells Hellboy that she’s learning to control her gift. However, Grigori shows up and implants a dream of fire causing her to explode into flames destroying part of the hospital itself.

Hellboy returns to the subway where he destroy Mr. Stinky the night before to look for eggs the demon left behind. However Hellboy sees the Nazis assassin and chases after him leaving his fellow FBI  agents vulnerable.

Clay, Hellboy’s closes friend and favorite agent, is gravely injured by the Nazis assassin, and even though agent John Myers talks Liz into returning to the Bureau, Hellboy is distressed by her interest in John. When the two go out on a “date”, Hellboy follows. Meanwhile Dr. Broom is examining what he thinks is the body of the dead  Nazis assassin.  But it turns out that the assassin is being controlled by Grigori, and upon learning this, Grigori has the assassin kill the good doctor. With Dr. Broom’s death, Hellboy’s team heads to Moscow to shut down the threat of evil.

What can I say about this movie that hasn’t already been said before. Maybe a lot or maybenothing at all.  With that said, this blockbuster movie from 2004 is not much of a horror movie, but Hellboy is certainly a movie based on a very famous horror comic book.

I don’t think they could have found a better actor to portray Hellboy other than Ron Pearlman. He definitely brings the right amount of sarcastic wit and humor along with comedic slap-stick. If nothing else, I think Mr. Pearlman is the reason Hellboy was such a hit spawning two successful sequels.

Needless to to say, Hellboy is an entertaining ride from start to finish. So for its pure entertainment value, I give this movie 5 out of 5 non-bloody stumps up.
