Back in 2009, long before FOX’s horror-comedy series starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Roberts, VH1 had a reality competition called “Scream Queens,” which saw undiscovered actresses vying for a break-out role in an upcoming movie. Around that time, Saw was the big name in horror and the two winners of “Scream Queens” saw roles in Saw VI and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter. Gabby West, season two’s champion, played the small role of Kara, a member of the skinhead gang killed in the junkyard trap in Saw 3D. It wasn’t as big a part as it was hyped up to be, and most hardcore horror fans will recognize Ms. West more for her co-starring role of Peggy Lou in Tim Sullivan’s ‘I Was A Teenage Werebear’ in 2011’s Chillerama.
After that, however, Gabby left the horror scene behind – and the mainstream entertainment industry for that matter. Since her time dealing in the world of blood and guts, she’s only appeared in three short films that were released every other year. Though that’s not to say she hasn’t been enjoying life. If her social media pages are anything to go by, she’s kept inspired with low profile gigs and a life of education and enlightenment and she appears to still possess that shiny disposition that made America fall in love with her in the first place. Still, as a fan of hers, I’ve been waiting for the day she returns to slashing knives and attacking monsters.
Well, it appears that day might just be on the horizon! According to her Twitter page, Gabby West has successfully booked a role in an upcoming project that will air on the SyFy Network. In recent years, the network has moved away from producing monster movies and thrillers and aimed its focus at churning out quality horror and science fiction shows, with “The Magicians” and “Z Nation” being its biggest hits. So, it’s unlikely that Gabby will be appearing in a network movie. The only other alternative is she’s going to be featured in one of SyFy’s shows. My bet is that she’ll pop up in an upcoming episode of “Channel Zero” or “Van Helsing” because those are the shows currently shooting right now.
Only time will tell, but I’m excited for her return to the genre!
