I was working late this evening, so I’m going to ruin the rest of your night with some unfortunate news. Sources are confirming that prolific actor John Hurt has passed away, having just celebrated his 77th birthday five days ago. His cause of death is being attributed to a battle with pancreatic cancer. The legendary actor and highly respected performer has over 205 credits to his resume and can be seen in hit movies like The Elephant Man, Midnight Express, Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and V for Vendetta, the first two titles he earned Oscar nominations for.
Sprinkled between television roles and movie characters that spanned a career over six decades long, John Hurt can be seen in a number of science fiction and horror titles. He is perhaps known, to us, for playing the role of Kane in equally iconic Alien (1979), as well as Ollivander in Harry Potter & The Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010) and Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011), and as Trevor Bruttenholm in Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy 2 (2008).
He can also be seen in films like The Ghoul (1975), Spectre (1977), The Shout (1978), After Darkness (1985), Spaceballs (1987), Frankenstein Unbound (1990), Monolith (1993), Lost Souls (2000), The Skeleton Key (2005) and Immortals (2011).
Dozens of celebrities are taking to social media to mourn the loss of John Hurt and all of us at HorrorSociety would like to send our condolences to his family, friends and fans. Wands up, guys!
