Award-winning Russian filmmaker Diana Galimzyanova finds a female composer for her upcoming debut feature, the first ever female-directed Russian film noir with reverse chronology, The Lightest Darkness. Ioana Dobroiu, the Romanian multi-instrumentalist, is willing to collaborate with her on this project.
“I’m extremely happy to work with a female composer,” stated Ms. Galimzyanova, the director of the film. “There’s still the significant lack of women composers, especially in mainstream cinema, and I’ve made a promise to myself that I’m going to hire as many women as I can for my debut feature so as to support the amazing women in film. I’ve already had the pleasure to work with Ioana on my low-budget horror short Minotauress. That was recently shot in Finland with an international cast and crew, and it is now in post production.”
Dobroiu is eager to bring her colorful avant-garde style to the complicated world of film noir.
“I have been really attracted to the 1900 period of film-making, art, and inventions,” composer Dobroiu said. “The avant-garde movements during that era and the film noir are some of the things I cannot miss out. That is why when I heard of the project I could not contain myself with excitement about working on it.”
“The Lightest Darkness” is currently in the midst of an IndieGoGo campaign to raise $35,000 to cover the costs associated with the production of the movie. Inspired by the pioneer women directors like Ida Lupino, Galimzyanova wants to make an authentic film noir that stays true to the roots of the style but also has a modern twist.
