There is no stopping a popular fish movie, apparently. Finding Dory looks like it will maintain the #1 spot at the box office for its third week in a row if we go by weekend estimates, where the animated sequel made about $41,900,000. The Legend of Tarzan was a close second, with $38,135,000 in ticket sales, but I think the swimming fish will be able to fend off the gorilla man by Friday.
The Purge 3: Election Year proves to be another successful entry in the franchise. This weekend it opened to a showing of $30,871,000 and took the #3 spot at the box office, which covered its production costs including promotion and already put $15,000,000 in the bank for Universal, Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse Productions. The Purge saw $34,058,000 during its opening weekend in June 2013 and The Purge 2: Anarchy saw $29,816,000 during its opening weekend in July 2014; which means The Purge 3: Election Year stands a chance of beating the gross revenue generated by The Purge 2.
In other news, animated scifi-fantasy The BFG made an estimated $19,584,000 during its first three days of release. Independence Day: Resurgence continues to underperform and made $16,500,000. The Shallows continues to take a chunk out of the box office and made another $9,000,000 in ticket sales over the weekend, putting its total at $35,251,000 and makes it a wild success considering its budget of only $22,000,000. The Conjuring 2 made $3,850,000 in ticket sales, which puts its total gross to $95,283,000 in a little over three weeks. So close to crossing the $100,000,000 mark!
And… weird… creepy… uncomfortable… fantasy… movie… thing… Swiss Army Man saw a huge jump in revenue to the tune of $1,447,000 since the movie opened in an additional 633 theaters this weekend. I’m glad to see a film starring Daniel Radcliffe doing well at the box office since his previous roles post The Woman In Black (2012) have flopped. I’m talking about Horns, Victor Frankenstein and What If.
