As Buffalo filmmaker John Renna prepares to announce production of his second feature film, he is wrapping post on his debut, Dick Johnson & Tommygun vs. The Cannibal Cop, in which he and Sam Qualiana (Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast) co-star with such genre favorites as Danny Hicks, Timothy Patrick Quill and Debbie Rochon. Hicks and Quill are best known for their roles in Sam Raimi’s films: Hicks played Jake in Evil Dead 2, and Quill essayed the Blacksmith in Army of Darkness. In conjunction with the release of the full trailer for the film, the pair discuss their experiences making the film in Buffalo last summer, including an incident in which filming in a cemetery was interrupted by real gunfire.
“Dick Johnson was the most fun I’ve ever had making a movie,” says Hicks. “It was great to work with my old pal Quill, and Debbie Rochon is an absolute blast. John Renna is…oh, what is the word I’m looking for? Oh yeah, NUTS! The filmmaking talent pool in Buffalo is really quite remarkable, on both sides of the camera. I’ve never considered myself a method actor, but I have to admit the live ammunition gunfire in the cemetery scene got the old juices flowing.”
Hicks plays Captain Phil Philips, who does far more than sit behind a desk and bark orders at his subordinates, though he does plenty of that; he goes out in the field and engages the enemy. Quill plays Shabby Sammy, a shady underworld character in the tradition of noir characters played by Peter Lorre and Elisha Cook, Jr.
“I want to share what a great experience I had filming Cannibal Cop,” says Quill. “I worked with a premium cast and crew that jelled perfectly, led by a fantastic director/ actor, John Renna, who pulled it all together. I got to perform with my favorite acting partner and long time buddy, Danny Hicks. What a hoot. We’ve performed together on such flicks as Spiderman, My Name is Bruce, Oz The Great and Powerful and a number of others. Folks, this movie is a must see, and you will at film fests this fall. Promoters are already curious. Thanks for the great memories, gang….Let’s do it again soon!”
Dick Johnson and Tommygun vs. The Cannibal Cop, which follows a pair of mismatched detectives as they hunt the titular serial killer, features a musical performance by the Japanese alternative rock group Pinky Doodle Doo.
