The Creature from the Black Lagoon remake has been trying to get launched in Hollywood for a very long time, decades in fact. Over the years there have been many, many names attached to write and direct the project – John Carpenter, Guillermo Del Toro, just to name a couple. Each of those proposed remakes of the classic 1954 sci-fi film have fallen through for one reason or another.
There is word today from The Tracking Board that Universal is eyeing Scarlett Johansson to star in a new remake of the Creature.
If you’ve been following Horror Society, over the last several months we’ve posted news about Universal rebooting their classic monster franchise and containing them all in a shared universe, ala Marvel. This started with Dracula Untold last year and we know that next in the franchise will be a new Mummy film. But what we have not heard until now is the studio’s plans to resurrect the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan were hired by the studio to structure the universe.
The current remake is taking shape at Universal, with Larger Than Life and Strike Entertainment producing. Gary Ross, Robin Bissell, Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, with a screenplay by Jeff Blitz, Gary Ross, Tedi Sarafian and Paul Schering. Leslie Urdang, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Jay Polidoro will oversee development for the studio.
The original 1954 film starred Julia Adams as the lovely heroine who was being stalked by the Gill man and had to do battle with the creature.
