David Bateman set to score “The Dark Below”

Bateman_PR

Composer David Bateman is hard at work currently scoring the thriller, The Dark Below for director Douglas Schulze (Dark Fields, Mimesis, Hellmaster). The movie is a survival thriller that explores the fear of entrapment beneath a frozen lake. The film stars screen veteran Veronica Cartwright (Alien, Witches of Eastwick) and Lauren Mae Shafer (Mimesis). This marks a third collaboration with Schulze.

Bateman has developed a unique approach to his scores by making off-beat and imperfect instruments. In preparation for most of his scores, he gathers a wide range of field recordings to embody them into a hybrid sort of orchestra. We learned this from one of his more recent scores to the thriller, Cassidy Way. The film dealt with fracking, so David went out to a fracking site to record various sounds which he later developed into many disturbing instruments to help mold the score for the film. Since The Dark Below takes place mostly on or near a frozen lake, we can only imagine how this score will sound using those same elements.

Bateman’s latest movie project, A Girl Like Her is currently playing in theaters and he is also slated to score the heist-thriller Blue Line, starring Tom Sizemore later this Spring.
