Sig Haig was a legendary film and television actor with a career that spanned 60 years. In the 60s and 70s he could be found in a plethora of exploitation films with very few films in the 80s and 90s but he was able to appear in Tarantino’s Jackie Brown before taking the horror genre over as Captain Spaulding in Rob Zombie’s House of the 1000 Corpses. In September of 2019 Sid passed away leaving behind millions of fans and his loving wife Susan Oberg.
After his passing Susan has turned his social media accounts into remembrance pages in his honor where she shares photos of Sid from the various film and television shows he appeared on along with photos of him with his fans. A touching tribute to the late actor from someone that truly loved him.
On a recent post Susan shared a story that involved Sid back in the 70s when he fell in love with the Philippines. Below can be found on her Instagram page @remembering.sid.haig
“So when Sid was working so heavily in the Philippines in the ’70s, he saw that there was a beautiful piece of property (land only) for sale. Problem was, at the time, Americans were not allowed to own property in the Philippines. So Sid spoke to one of the native Philippinos he had become good friends with, and the two worked out a deal. Sid gave his buddy the money for the property ($2,000 USD), and his buddy bought it in his name. Then, Sid rented it, on a 99 year lease, for ONE DOLLAR! It was breathtaking! Beachfront cove, mango grove, beautiful lagoon, and the natural beauty of the Philippines. The beachfront cove can be seen in the film Beyond Atlantis, where Sid plays East Eddie (photos above). Well, Sidney loved him some mangos, so one day he was going to get some fresh mangos from the grove and then he would have a nice refreshing dip in the lagoon. So he’s in the grove, hanging by his legs from a tree branch, picking mangos and tossing them on the ground at the base of the tree. He was going to get the mangos from that branch and then just drop into the lagoon and enjoy the day off. Well, the Universe was definitely watching over him that day, because his friend who had bought the property for him had just so happened to be having a walk around that same day. He comes across Sidney, hanging upside down picking his mangos, and sees that Sid is hanging above the water. He yelled to Sid, “Don’t go in the water! Don’t swim in the water!” At first, Sid thought his buddy was messing with him, but then he saw the guy’s face and he looked terrified. So Sid thought, “Ok, what the hell is going on here?” and came in from the branch. He looks at his friend and asks what that was all about. His buddy says, “Watch…” and picks up a mango. He gently tosses the mango into the lagoon and the water just EXPLODED! With Red-bellied piranha!!! Now, while they are very aggressive, they usually don’t attack humans. However, if they get hungry enough, even a mango will do……..Or a 6’4″ maniac with a fondness for fresh mangos.
Sid ate his mangos on the beach.”
