James Karen, Return of the Living Dead and Poltergeist Actor Dies at 94

James Karen, who starred in over 200 films and TV shows died Tuesday at the age of 94.

Karen was best known for his roles in Poltergeist, The Return of the Living Dead, Invaders from Mars, and in The Pursuit of Happyness

Karen was born Jacob Karnofsky in Wilkes-Barre, in northeastern Pennsylvania, the son of Russian-born Jewish immigrants Mae (née Freed) and Joseph H. Karnofsky, a produce dealer. He attended the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York

His death was confirmed by longtime friend and film critic Leonard Maltin.

The actor is survived by son Reed Karen, two grandchildren and his wife of more than 30 years, actress Alba Francesca.
