CRUX: Black Sol Empire is an occult-themed concept short from Toronto 3D-animator, Plant Head and Blizzard Entertainment creature designer, Alvaro Buendia.
Synopsis: It is often said that the devil can be found at the crossroads; it is the proverbial meeting point of good and evil. The bridge between heaven and hell. The battleground that may be inside each individual’s soul. Filmmaker and animator, Plant Head, along with creature designer, Alvaro Buendia, aim to visualize this point of spiritual intersection through the choreography of crucifixion. The onslaught of turbulence, violence and gnashing teeth that follow, is directed at the viewer in a way that is confrontational and abrasive. It begs one to introspect on the origins of this chaos. To wonder if it’s an event rooted in the backstory of a fantasy or if it’s an inner gaze at the darker territories of the human psyche itself?
Animator/ Filmmaker Bio:
Plant Head is a 3D artist and motion designer with over a decade of experience in C4D, Zbrush and After Effects. Creating short films and illustrations under the banner of Plant Head, he is able to explore his oddball interests in shamanism, the occult, biotechnology and transhumanism.
Creature Designer Bio:
Alvaro Buendia is a Senior Character Modeler who currently works at Blizzard Entertainment’s Cinematic Department. With contributions on many of Blizzard’s cutting edge Cinematic such as World of Warcraft’s Wrath of the lich king, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Diablo 3, and Starcraft 2.
