Did You Know Elvira Almost Had Her Own Sitcom?

“We’re the police! This is a bust!” “No, this is a bust!”

Did you know that the greatest horror host of all time almost had her own sitcom in 1993? Five years after the modest box office success and cult following of Elvira, Mistress of The Dark, a sitcom co-written, co-produced and co-starring Cassandra Peterson went into production. It was eyed up by CBS and a pilot was filmed, but the television giant passed on bringing “The Elvira Show” to series during pick up season.

And I can see why. The pilot episode is filled to the brim with mouthfuls of sexual innuendos, dirty jokes and gags, and sassy strong women that audiences were not ready for in 1993. The media would have torn it to shreds, while Elvira fans, supernatural fans and dirty humor fans would have given it a round of applause. While we love Elvira for two reasons… her hokiness and spunk, of course… “The Elvira Show” would flourish more in 2016 than it would have in 1993.

*cough* so bring it back on netflix or hulu *cough*

“The Elvira Show” was to star Cassandra Peterson, Katherine Helmond (fresh off her tenure on “Who’s the Boss”) and “Twin Peaks” actress Phoebe Augustine as three witches living in Manhattan, Kansas. The show would, obviously, follow all the hilarious trouble they get into while also serving as a quasi-sequel to the original movie. The pilot continues to explore Elvira’s supernatural routes, her family heritage, and features an animal companion like Gonk – this time a cat voiced by Pee-Wee’s Playhouse’s John Paragon – and a husky lumberjack like Bob, this time as a character named Chip (Ted Henning).

See the unaired, unfulfilled pilot below.
