The film tells about the story of Paula, a journalism student, who travels with her ‘film maker’ boyfriend to a remote Patagonian island in southern Chile to investigate the relationship between the great number of sexual crimes and the myths & legends that surround the mysterious place. The movie makes use of ancient myths and historical events of the island as a backdrop to tell the story of Paula and Matias. This sets a solid base to bring fundamental presumption and credibility to the film.
Wekufe is a perfect horror story for these days. Writer and Director Javier Attridge boldly dives into a very controversial and macabre theme such as the relationship that exists between the high sexual crime rate and the local legends, making the inherited paranoia, passed on by generations about the myths & legends, play a centerpiece role in the spectator’s perception.
The film makers maintain the movie as real as possible, pushing unexpectedly the limits of this type of production. At the same time they add a balanced banter between the main characters, without loosing the unsettling sensation the movie causes throughout.
This film uses an authentic legend, real historical events and is completely filmed at actual locations with disturbing testimonies of genuine locals. Creating a very thin line between fact and fiction.
The film is ready to enter the International Festival Circuit and its premiere in Chile is expected early to mid 2017. In the meantime, we invite you to watch the promotional trailer that will certainly raise an eyebrow or two.
“Wekufe,” a name you will certainly not forget . . .
