Big surprise here folks! New Line Cinema have already announced a sequel to the hit horror film, Lights Out. Because Hollywood loves to beat a dead horse, we’ll be getting a sequel to a film which probably doesn’t need one.

Per Deadline, New Line Cinema has quickly flipped the switch on a sequel to Lights Out, the $4.9 million-budget genre film that already has grossed $27 million domestically and $35 million worldwide after opening Friday. David F. Sandberg confirms he will return for an encore of his feature directorial debut.

Lights Out came from a short film that Sandberg made in Sweden with his wife. The short film became such a huge success that eventually New Line called and wanted to turn the film into a full-length feature. Sandberg and his wife had no idea their short film would’ve become such a success and made the way for them to get their foot into Hollywood’s door.

Eric Heisserer will return to write the sequel and Sandberg will direct it. James Wan will be back as producer through his Atomic Monster banner, and so will Lawrence Grey through his Grey Matter banner.

Sandberg said his wife will have bigger acting roles in his upcoming films, after she starred in Lights Out opposite Maria Bello, Theresa Palmer and Alexander DiPersia, and has a role in Annabelle 2. Sandberg and Losten have been sweethearts since age 11.

Sandberg is currently directing the horror sequel, Annabelle 2.
