Killer sharks are a staple in the horror film subgenre of creature features. Earlier years saw the carnivorous swimmers as lurking predators, but in recent years advances in technology and attempts to make the most unrealistic attack sequence have seen a lot of ideas that are… silly. Sharks that can swim through the sand. Sharks that exist in the snow. Sharks with numerous heads. And even robotic, zombie or ghost sharks. With The Deep End, fans of these features are treated to the newest evolution in shark attack scenes with… inflatable sharks. Yes, the pool floaties.
The Deep End was written, directed and produced by Alexander T. Hwang under the episode Absurd TV series. It is obviously meant to be a parody of The Shallows, which is currently making a killing at the United States box office. Interestingly enough – it’s not that bad. Again, the idea is silly, but I couldn’t stop watching for some reason! I felt like I was watching lost Scary Movie 5 footage for the first time. The absurdity is mixed with good acting and lots of blood spallters, so I can’t harp on The Deep End. I think it accomplished whatever it set out to do.
The thirteen minute short film stars Baylee Curran, Charles Chudabala, Raymond Williams with Anthony Werley and Noel Jason Scott.
