I truly hate this part of my job here at Horror Society but it’s what we do. We have sad news to report that actor and former WWE superstar wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper has passed away at the age of 61. The WWE Hall of Famer passed away today from natural causes.
According to TMZ Sports, Piper died from cardiac arrest in his sleep at his home in Hollywood at around noon Friday. Piper had been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2006, but last November he said he was cancer free.
This is a major shock to wrestling and film fans as he had just been commenting on the recent Hulk Hogan scandal.
Piper was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 and was one of the most beloved villains of all time in that sport. Piper born Roderick George Toombs shot to fame in the 1980’s as the kilt-wearing, bagpipe-playing villain in the WWE. His success in wrestling led to a successful film career in Hollywood.
Piper got his first big break in movies when John Carpenter cast him as the lead in his now sci-fi classic, They Live in 1988. He also went on to star in Hell Comes to Frogtown, also in 1988 and a slew of horror and action films & TV shows including Superboy (TV Series), Silk Stalkings (TV Series), Highlander (TV Series), Immortal Combat, The Outer Limits (TV Series), Costa Chica: Confession of an Exorcist, Ghosts of Goldfield, Street Team Massacre, A Gothic Tale, The Portal, Lights Out and many more. He most recently had nearly a dozen films in various stages of development.
Anyone who grew up watching WWE wrestling in the 1980’s or was a fan of his most successful film, They Live knows how devastating this is the those communities.
All of us here at Horror Society would like to offer our sincerest condolences to Roddy Piper’s family, friends and fans during this extremely difficult time.
