Composing duo Sonicsmiths, Sam Estes and Michael Hobe, are no strangers to the horror film world having scored the 2012 psychological horror hit “Fear Lives Hear’ which centers around five college friends whom embark on a hiking trip that quickly turns into a deadly nightmare. They are soon going to be taking a new approach to scoring horror and other film genres with a tool they are creating called The Foundry.
The Foundry is a sound design creation tool within the Native-Instrument’s Kontakt engine that can draw from sample content with more than 2,000 core sounds that can be manipulated and combined in millions of ways with a simple push of a button. The Foundry is set to be released in April 2015 through Big Fish Audio and was previewed at this year’s NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) expo.
When asked how The Foundry is different from all the other sound design tools on the market today, they replied “Composers often have little time to design sounds for their scores and have to rely on preset sounds from libraries to get a “tone” they want. Problem is, once they pull up a preset sound, they now sound like everyone else who has used that sound. So our solution is to create an engine that will generate unique patches based on a style you want. So say you want a “dark, metallic, pulsing bed” – you select those adjectives and then press a randomize button. The program will create something that fits those adjectives – and it will create something NEW each time you press that random button, so that way you can make sounds quickly, without sounding like everyone else.”
Michael and Sam both met at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions and worked on “Inception,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” “The Dark Knight,” and other films before heading to Cinesamples. There, they developed commercial libraries for the public. In their free time they continued working on private sound design and samples for esteemed composers Danny Elfman (“Silver Linings Playbook” and “The Simpsons”), Michael Giacchino (“Lost” and “Up”) Junkie XL (“Divergent” and “300: Rise of an Empire”) Christopher Lennertz (“Agent Carter” and “Supernatural”).
