A proudly Mancunian and independent games developer in the heart of the Manchester City Centre will be releasing a fresh version – demo version 0.04 – of its futuristic shooter epic, ‘Beyond Flesh and Blood’ on Tuesday 17th February at www.b-fb.net
It’s still as messy and bloody as ever, with exploding ragdoll gore, ‘improved’ alien life-forms which take their queues from arachnids and reptiles; as well as a new drone enemy class.
The game’s aesthetic is slowly evolving into both a sci-fi infused, steampunk-esque gore fest, and it has previously been described as a callback to the glory days of 90s PC gaming.
Featuring the real-life city locations of Deansgate, Beetham Tower and Albert Square (complete with a Town Hall), the single-player videogame features iconic landmarks and various forms of giant robots or ‘mecha’ – who you play as – rampaging through the city.
This ‘giant robot’ trope is typically used in extremely popular Japanese games as well as harking a big tribute to Halo and Gears of War.
The indie developer Pixelbomb Games, who are based entirely in Manchester, have made it their company mission to make the city one which is as iconic as London in the gaming world – by re-imagining it in a dystopian, overgrown and artful light.
The northern PC and console game Beyond Flesh and Blood will be releasing the full version on PC, XBOX, PS4 and Linux at the end of the year – it was previously noted for a 2014 release, but the studio is planning to gain support from a large console publisher in the coming months.
The Steam community initially Greenlit the game in their thousands, back in the spring of 2014, when it was still a concept called ‘Beyond: Flesh and Blood’. It managed to achieve the the all-important YES in just 13 days. It has allowed the indie collective of game developers to finally realize their extremely gory, science-fiction version of Manchester.
