The 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival is just around the corner and the all important Midnight Section selections have just been announced. This year’s selections are comprised of thrillers, sci-fi, dark comedies and horror, along with shorts and music videos.
Film distribs watch what clicks at the Midnighters with a close eye in order to capitalize on horror-philes in either the VOD or theatrical market. Last year’s sell-out Big Foot title Exists from Blair Witch Project co-helmer Eduardo Sanchez sold domestic rights to Lionsgate. Attack The Block was a huge crowd pleaser in 2011 and was snapped up by Screen Gems. In 2013, Alamo Drafthouse acquired midnight flick Cheap Thrills in a theaterical and VOD pick-up. Last year’s Midnighters title Starry Eyes, about a wannabe Hollywood starlet who undergoes a series of terrifying mental and physical transformations, became a hit on iTunes. In the wake of Starry Eyes’ play, WME signed the film’s directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer.
