During Fox day today at the TCA Winter Press Tour, Fox confirmed they are indeed hoping to reboot the cult supernatural series, The X-Files. Because of the success of their recent limited series 24: Live Another Day, the studio is open to the return of The X-Files as a limited-run series.
Before you even ask…yes, it would still feature special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, and yes, they would still be played by original stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
Heads of Fox Gary Newman and Dana Walden had this to say:
“I think it’s been reported and it’s true that we’ve had some conversations on X-Files. We’re hopeful we’ll bring that back at some point.
If this happens, it will be with David and Gillian reprising their roles. Chris [Carter] is interested, both David and Gillian are interested. Scheduling it is very different. David has his shows and Gillian is doing something in the UK, so it’s a little hard. I really don’t know how fast it can happen because of that. But there are ongoing conversations happening.”
Gillian Anderson had this to say about the prospects of a series reboot and not a feature film:
“I need to wrap my brain around what that would entail,” she said. “I live in London. I’ve got three kids, it’s not a small proposition and it would take a lot longer to shoot than a movie would. I need to think about that.”
Walden spoke of the difficulties of making this work, saying the conversations so far have been only logistical, looking at windows when the key X-Files players, creator Carter and stars Duchovny and Anderson, are available. She confirmed that a potential X-Files followup will star the original leading duo of Duchovny and Anderson. There have been no creative discussions yet about what that new series might be.
So for fans of the series, this is extremely hopeful for something happening in the near future. We’ll be keeping a very close eye on the progress and will let you know the minute any new developments are released…I want to believe!
