I received word on a cool-looking new web series from its creator that just premiered its first episode today. How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse is from creator/writer/executive producer Justin M. Lesniewski and if the first episode is any indication of what the series will be like then I’m hooked. Read on for more details and check out Episode One down below.
The series is the brainchild of writer/EP Justin M. Lesniewski and along with episode one director/executive producer Stewart Wade and executive producer Hannah Lebiga, the trio came up with a web series that is the genesis of the next evolution of the zombie sub-genre.
Episode one is complete but the funds for that episode came entirely out of the filmmakers own pockets. Thus they have started an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to finish the first season. You can make this become a reality by donating to the How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse Indiegogo crowdfunding page here!
The cast includes Tyler Mauro, Patrick Finerty, Xango Henry, Wyntergrace Williams, Leah McKendrick, Martin McKenzie and Bear Badeaux.
Plot Synopsis
The zombie apocalypse happened when Norm Elman was just eight years old, so he barely remembers a life outside of the supposed safe haven he and his father call home. Founded a decade ago as the deliverance from the undead, Soteria keeps its residents breathing through their obedience to The Oath and the town’s leader who crafted it. Norm’s flouting of Soteria’s strict rules has made him its least favorite son, so when his father does the unthinkable, he’s forced to either fall in line or figure out how to survive with his own mind.
How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse is a web series designed around the next evolution of the iconic horror monster.
In recent years, many writers and directors have attempted to humanize zombies. In 2005 in Land of the Dead genre progenitor George A. Romero equated zombies with humans in the climatic scene when the protagonist stops his compatriot from killing a pack of zombies, “No, they’re just looking for a place to go, same as us.” The 2006 movie Fido centered on a friendship between a young boy and his pet zombie who was as protective of him as the family dog might be. Most extreme of all, 2013 saw a retelling of Romeo & Julie called Warm Bodies with the role of Romeo filled by a thinking, feeling, talking teenage zombie.
It’s like somehow everyone forgot that zombies’ main food source is not just humans but their brains. Our story doesn’t forget that fact. It reinterprets it. We won’t say more, as we don’t want to ruin any surprises, but we promise, it’ll eat your brain out.
Part The Walking Dead, part The Hunger Games, and part Anthem by Ayn Rand, How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse seeks to do for zombies what The Strain is doing for vampires–make them horrifying once again.
