Monsterman's 31 Days of Halloween Horror Picks

Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

This annual Halloween classic is a must watch for the holiday season. Although the studio labeled this film as the third film in the Halloween franchise, it actually has nothing to do with Michael Myers or the previous two films. Original film creators John Carpenter and producer Debra Hill were planning on creating an annual film series set during Halloween with different stories each time, but the studio thought better of it and the planned first film was re-labeled as Halloween III. When the film was released, fans and critics panned it horribly mainly due to the botched titling causing confusion and anger when people thought they were getting another Michael Myers film.

If you take the film as a stand alone movie, not related to the Halloween series, it’s actually a really great film. Time has been kind to Halloween III, it has grown into a cult favorite with the fans. British Hammer films writer Nigel Kneale (The Abominable Snowman, The Witches, Five Million Years to Earth) wrote the initial script for Season of the Witch, but petitioned to have his name removed from the project when he saw how violent the film was.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch was written and directed by Tommy Lee Wallace (Fright Night Part 2, It (TV Mini-Series), Vampires: Los Muertos). The film stars Tom Atkins (The Fog, Night of the Creeps), Stacey Nelkin, Dan O’Herlihy, Michael Currie, Ralph Strait, Jadeen Barbor and Dick Warlock.
