The Evil Within (or Psycho Break in japan) is a Third Person Survival Horror. The game was developed by Tango GameWorks and published by Bethesda Softworks.
You play as Detective Sebastian Castellanos (Anson Mount), as he and his partners Joseph Oda (Yuri Lowenthal) and Julie Kidman (Jennifer Carpenter) are on their way to investigate a mass murder at The Beacon Mental Asylum. (The game’s asylum is based on The Winchester Mystery House in California due to it’s unique architectural design.) When they arrive at the scene of the crime, they are greeted by aftermath of the gruesome massacre of the patients and staff. As they venture further, they find a survivor by the name of Doctor Marcelo Jimenez. As you go to check the security monitor, you watch three police officers instantly get murdered by a cloaked man. The cloaked man then begins to stare at the Detective and then appears behind him knocking him out. When your character comes to, you find yourself hung upside down in room filled with corpses and The Sadist a.k.a chainsaw wielding maniac. As he walks away with the upper half of the hanging corpse next to you, it give time to make your escape. But as soon as you make your way to the exit, The Sadist finds you and he brought his trusty blood soaked chainsaw and thus the intense chase begins. After you finally manage to escape from The Sadist cluches, you enter an elevator back to the main floor of the asylum. The director of the game, Shinji Mikami (creator of Resident Evil) wanted to create a game that would give players a sense of helplessness and The Evil Within delivers as it loves to make you feel helpless as stealth is most likely your best option since ammo is hardly spared. (unless you are on easy) Honestly I have to say this has got to be one of the best horror games I’ve played. (and yes I’ve played A LOT of them) The game is absolutely beautiful from the game’s environments, unique puzzles, and cinematic camera angles. The Evil Within will pull you into the deepest darker corners of fear and leave you begging for more.
The Evil Within is available now for Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and PC.
Great Writeup! I think some of the best elements in horror games (besides freaky images, great story) are the ones in which you are more concerned with escaping with your life rather than having all the hardware to blow everything away. That’s what was great about the Resident Evil games- you had a minimal amount of ammo with guns that did minimal damage to enemies. Or in the beginning of silent hill where all you had was a damn flashlight!! It really put me on the edge of my seat. Looking forward to playing this one!
