This is news we already knew from Comic-con, but Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have officially announced that Godzilla 2 won’t make its way to theaters until 2018. The holdup is because Gareth Edwards, who directed this summer’s smash Godzilla won’ t be available to start work on the film until he finishes the Star Wars spinoff film he will be directing for Disney and Lucasfilm.
Godzilla was a solid hit for Warner Bros. and Legendary, earning nearly $508 million at the worldwide box office. Gareth Edwards will again be returning to direct the sequel which will not hit theaters until 2018.
Godzilla is a passion project for Thomas Tull’s Legendary, which was previously set up at Warner Bros. Although Legendary now has distribution and production deal with Universal, it will continue to partner with Warners on the Godzilla franchise.
Edwards has come a long way from his first feature film, the critically acclaimed, low-budget 2010 sci-fi/thriller Monsters to directing the mega budgeted Godzilla and now a Star Wars spinoff.
