Aside from the fact that this movie isn’t quite horror, aside from the impressive level of gore, i’m impressed. I’d consider this more of a dark history lesson, of a much more savage and cruel time. This film touches on alot of controversial times of the past, mostly revolving around religion. (okay, so 90% of this movie has to do with religion)
I enjoyed the eerie feel of this film, even from the very start, the movie gives off a very strange vibe. From the costumes to the FX, everything is so gritty and real. Speaking of FX, this movie is on point, but so is the acting, the story, and the wardrobe.
I always enjoy the occasional movie about the plague, but the supernatural spin this movie gives, even if the supernatural spin was an illusion, was great. So rare to have a good story that involves witches, even if, ya know, they aren’t actually witches.
This movie does start to get really creepy once they arrive in the village. This was when the movie really got good for me. The atmosphere just feels so off, but in a good way. I was just waiting for something crazy to happen. I was not disappointed. The scene in the Marsh towards the end of the movie was a great example of that. The mood is so creepy and awesome, yet heart breaking at the same time, as you find out the truth to the mystery of the village.
I give this movie a definite Slash. This film paints a bloody, glorious picture of a dark and brutal age. I was very impressed with the story and the beautiful FX. And although it’s not really horror in my book, it deserves a watch.
