So much is posted to the HorrorSociety Facebook Page that it’s almost impossible to keep up with it. Luckily, a shared Youtube video managed to grab my attention due to its title, Chainsaw Maid 3D. Almost immediately I pictured a feisty, seductive maid being scorned by former employers and seeking revenge on them with bloody chainsaw goodness. Imagine my surprise when I found myself watching a short film done completely in Claymation!
“Urgh,” you might say. “What is this? Gumbie?” Yes, I know, this form of creation may not be for everyone, but having taken two animation classes while in college, I know how hard it is to make a claymation/stop-motion project that is as perfect as Chainsaw Maid 3D is. Hell, all of my stop motion projects were less than a minute long, but they took hours! Claymation, I assume, takes three times as long because what you’re moving each time is multiple pieces of clay, not just a single object. And not only that, you have to take a picture every time something moves a fraction of a fraction of a centimeter. Basically, what I’m trying to get across here is that obviously Chainsaw Maid 3D took mind numbing dedication and precision.
Visually Chainsaw Maid 3D is perfect in its design. The use of 3D here is actually quite genius and it is used sparingly; and most importantly it looks better than half of the 3D films I’ve seen with much bigger budgets. I’m a firm believer in sometimes less is more! The clay figures are unique and stay in form throughout the entire three and a half minute rampage. Even the use of black and white film on the 3D version I viewed and having it be silent – only using text screens to provide dialogue – gives it just the right feel cinematically. Everyone involved with this project should be super proud of this cohesive, well put together claymation. Who knew this form of animation could be artistic?
While I didn’t get to see sexy, real life maid, I did get to see a lot of other good shit! Chainsaw Maid 3D contains a lot of clay gore, including zombie creatures getting sawed in half, cutting off someone’s arms and hands, brains getting eaten, and a scene…with an anus…that does things. And I also never thought I’d see a claymation boner in my lifetime. I’ll just leave you with those visuals! All things considered, the over the top gore and nudity done with clay added a layer of hilarity to this title that was much needed. It showed that Chainsaw Maid 3D knew its genre, new its vision, and went with it full swing.
My rating? Based on the material presented I give it 8.7 out of 10 stars!
