I’m just gonna start off saying that I REALLY do not like bugs, so this was quite an experience. Not to mention I’m sick at the moment and my throat hurts, which just made this ever creepier to watch. Talk about major heebie jeebies. I actually had to pause this several times while writing my notes for this review. (that NEVER happens to me)
The other factor that contributed to creep factor was the very impressive practical SFX. You could almost believe this footage was real. And this is not recommended for those with a weak stomach.
I really was not a fan of the found footage angle, as I’ve expressed on several occasions before this, but the story is impressive. The crazy political statement meets nasty bug movie. (don’t drink the water..) One scene that really stuck out to me was the scene where the man was begging the officer to shoot him. You don’t see a single thing except for the outside of the house for the whole scene, but you hear the conversations, and it is very intense.
My biggest complaint about this movie is that the scenes tend to get a bit choppy and abrupt. At some points things jump around too quickly and it gets hard to follow. The one remedy to this is the labeling they used in the majority of scenes, from names and times, to explaining its a missed voicemail, it at least somewhat helps keep an idea of what’s going on.
Overall this film isn’t really my cup of tea, but I’m giving it a SLASH for the creep factor and the impressive SFX.
