*By now the entire film horror community knows that a new film premeries tomorrow night on SyFy Channel. I’m talking about Sharknado and the outlandish plot surprisingly has people twirling with anticipation. I think Sharknado is going to be one of the most watched SyFy/Asylum flicks in a while, so I wanted to take this time to put a spotlight on an up-and-coming, talented actor from the film. David Bittick plays the character of “Nada” in Sharknado. In this interview, you’ll get to read all about David’s time on Sharknado as well as his other acting prospects and life in general. Read it all below.
Can you introduce yourself to readers?
Hi, I’m David Bittick. I’m from a town south of St. Louis, MO. I’m the second oldest of 5 kids (4 boys and a girl) and I’ve been acting in LA for over 2 years now.
Describe your first acting experience.
My first day on a Hollywood set was on the show “Louie,” with Louis CK directing and starring. Watching him work on lighting and setting up the shots he wanted just to switch over to acting in the scene was amazing to see. It was watching him on that first day that made me say, “Yep, I can do this. This is something I want and I’m willing to do whatever to get to that position.” That first day on set I was really nervous, I wasn’t sure how things worked in Hollywood and I wasn’t sure how much I.d like it. Turns out I loved it.
Even though it was a very small role, what was it working on the hit film, Argo?
I spent the better part of a week on Argo, it was shooting in Northridge at the time. It was great, made friends on that set that I still talk to. When you get the chance to see someone like Ben Afleck direct and coach with such a passion for the project it makes you want to perform that much better. He didn’t have much advice except, “Don’t think.” Don’t think, so simple, but it means so much. You should know who you are, where you are, your lines, your feelings so well that when you get on set and he yells, “Action!” that you just go.
Twitter says you’re a semi-pro football player. Would
you like to go into detail about that?
I played one full season with the Columbia Falcons in Missouri and I was gearing up for another when I finally made the move to LA. I love football. I wanted to play in college, but it didn’t work out, so to be able to play again was amazing. The team was like a family, some great talent and some really motivated individuals.
Had you ever seen an Asylum or SyFy Original Movie before getting
the role in Sharknado?
Sadly, no. I know that the series “Defiance” is set in St. Louis, but I haven’t found the time to start that series.
Can you tell us a little about your character “Nada”
in Sharknado?
Nada is second in command of a fishing ship in the Pacific Ocean. He’s in charge when the captain is below decks. I can’t say much more, just that the ship does the fishing of an illegal kind.
How many days were you on set and what was the mood like
those days?
We shot the scenes in one long day. Asylum always has a great crew. Most were excited to do some sailing, some weren’t. Overall the day was pretty smooth, the weather cooperated and the shots we got came out amazing. I cant wait to see how it comes out.
What was your favorite moment from filming?
Has to be sailing the ship through the (simulated) thunderstorm!
What are you up to for the rest of 2013? Any roles or
activities you’re excited about?
I’m looking to finish the Upright Citizens Brigade improv classes, started there this year and got hooked. I’m also working on a few web series, a late night mock talk show called “The New Level” and a few series of my own including an adult boy scout who’s having the hardest time making eagle scout. I do standup, performing at Formosa Café July 13 at 7:30, and also doing the Belly Room at The Comedy Store on Sunset July 16 at 8pm.
Favorite horror flick?
I Know What You Did Last Summer. I saw the movie when I was young at my best friends house, at the time I hadn’t seen anything like it so it really stuck out. I also like the classics: Holloween, The Shining, and the old monster movies.
*I just wanted to thank David for taking the time to chat with me, and I’m glad there’s someone out there who enjoys I Know What You Did Last Summer as much as I did. Remember, if you liked seeing David Bittick’s face and were impressed with his presence, then check out his standup routine at Formosa Cafe on July 13th and The Comedy Store on Sunset on July 16th!
