You will be surprised how tight knit the indie film community really is. For a few months now I have been receiving quite a few Facebook friend requests from various directors, actors, producers, and etc. Some were asking me to share news and updates (which I graciously did), however, a select few wanted me to review their films.
That brings me to this short entitled No Clowning Around which was directed by Rob Dimension who also stars in the leading role. I was curious as to why he added me and I discovered that he was a film maker and that led to me getting a link to the short to review.
**Spoiler Alert**The film follows Mumbles the Clown who was once a local celebrity that has now fell from grace. He is a raging alcoholic and often finds himself waking up in random places. On top of all that, he is also losing his mind.
He has a little orange puppet that he can communicate with. The only anchor to sanity for Mumbles is his lady, Trixie. Trixie loves Mumbles but not as much as she loves the needle. One even Trixie overdoses and dies sending Mumbles into a state of frenzy.
He sorts out the drug dealer responsible for supplying her the product and guts him. Mumbles makes balloon animals out of his intestines and then goes home to watch videos of his cancelled cable access show with his wife’s body and puppet. **Spoiler Alert**
I am a little pissed but not surprised I have not heard about this film before I contacted Dimension on Facebook. Most low budget films go unnoticed for the most part. Some of the best indie films I have seen are ones I just happened to accidentally come across. I really enjoyed this film but it does have it’s flaws.
The acting in this one is actually very good and I really enjoyed Dimension’s portrayal of his character. He plays a convincing drunk and unstable clown. I want this to sound like a compliment instead of an insult. The story is nothing clever nor is it nothing new to my reviews. Just recently I reviewed another clown film from 2012 called Sloppy the Psychotic. Both films involve a clown that is wronged and then kills those that have wronged him. Though both films have a similar story they both are completely different movies. This movie starts out with humor but quickly turns serious. It is this very reason that the movie received a 3 instead of higher. The film does have humor at the beginning of the film but it is extremely slow and boring. The movie would have been more effective if it was actually shorter and some of the beginning was cut or possibly rewrote.
Finally, the film does offer up some special effects and an on screen death. The special effects are decent and so is the on screen death. Unfortunately, we are only treated to one. I wish a few more deaths could have been added but for a short the one film still works well. Overall, this is an alcohol fueled joyride through the eyes of a clown. I highly recommend it.
