Becoming an independent director is easily one of the hardest decisions for a person with a vision to make. Not only is the director working with limited resources and time, but he is also working against other cinema fans as well. I have mentioned before that horror fans are rabid and will completely rip apart a film if they do not like it. Finally, the indie director has to market his film so it can reach the masses in hopes that their film reaches the hands of potential fans.
However, once in awhile a film will reach the masses just by word of mouth alone. That brings me to the film Sloppy the Psychotic. For a few weeks I have heard numerous horror fans mention this film with a mixed reviews. I did a little digging and was able to find the Facebook page. Once again I was suckered in by the artwork and reached out to them for a copy to review. A few days later I received it in the mail and could not wait to see it so thank you for taking the time to send me a copy.
**Spoiler Alert**The film follows Sloppy the clown who wants nothing more than to bring joy to the kids of the local community while being hounded by his parents to get a normal job. To make matters worse, Sloppy is being terrorized by the teenage population and is often the butt of their jokes.
However, after an incident involving a young girl, Sloppy loses his job. Things then begin to unwind and Sloppy loses control. He kills his former boss and those that have been tormenting him. He then visits a birthday party and kills all the party goers before it is revealed that Sloppy has been unstable for awhile. Some time ago Sloppy had actually killed his parents and they are now extremely decayed and the police are on to him!**Spoiler Alert**
Some movies will just surprise the shit out of you. You throw one in expecting to watch a cheesy low budget flick only to find yourself watching something way more than that. The acting in this one is far from good. In fact, the acting is definitely the low point of the film. After looking around on imdb.com I quickly discovered that most of the cast has very few film credits if they had any at all. More experience would have made a vast improvement.
The story is nothing original but for the budget and style it works very well. Also, the twist ending where we learn his parents have been dead for some time caught me off guard so kudos to them for being clever. Finally, this film does offer a slew of special effects and on screen kills. The special effects are not the best in the world but does not take away from the film. We do get a little black humor mixed with our special effects and kills which are something I welcome with arms open and would love to see applied to more indie horror flicks. Overall, Sloppy is one fun trip through insanity and back. I highly recommend it.
