The Shining is getting a lot of love right now courtesy of a number of related projects that are either out now or in development. First, there’s Stephen King’s novel Doctor Sleep which is a sequel to his own original novel, then there’s the documentary film, Room 237 about the film, and now there’s some interesting news that just came out.
According to Deadline, Glen Mazzara, who ran AMC’s smash hit series The Walking Dead for the past several seasons, will now focus on ghosts. He’s in talks to write The Overlook Hotel, a prequel to the Stanley Kubrick-directed The Shining, based on the Stephen King novel. The film is being developed at Warner Bros to be produced by Mythology Entertainment’s Bradley Fischer, James Vanderbilt and Laeta Kalogridis.
Mazzara took over for Walking Dead showrunner Frank Darabont near the end of season one and was head of the show for the entire second season until it seems he clashed with graphic novel creator Robert Kirkman and was fired. His first project outside of The Walking Dead is an ambitious one due to the fact the original film is so beloved by movie fans worldwide. It will be interesting to see what Mazzara’s take on the material will be.
