After Dusk They Come – REVIEW

First of all, let me give you a little background on this movie because it could be a little confusing as to which movie I’m actually reviewing. The Lost Tribe was filmed in 2009 in Brazil and after principal photographer completed, everyone was really underwhelmed with the footage that they had. So, production geared up once again in 2010 as The Forgotten Ones. After a short release overseas, the title was reworked to After Dusk They Come and released in America in 2012.

In After Dusk They Come, a shipwreck strands a small group of friends on a mysterious island. As they try to find a way off the island, they come face to face with frightening humanoid creatures who have roamed the island for centuries. And if matters couldn’t be worse, the creatures are also cannibals. Now the group of friends must fight their way through the island full of cannibal creatures if they hope to be rescued.

After Dusk They Come is written and directed by Jorg Ihle. The film stars Jewel Staite (“Stargate: Atlantis,” “The L.A. Complex”), Justin Baldoni (“The Bold and The Beautiful,” “Everwood”), Marc Bacher, Nikki Griffin (“The Young and The Restless,” “The O.C.”), Kellan Lutz (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Twilight saga), and Helena Barrett (Vampires Suck, Date Movie).

I think the fate of this movie was unjustly thrust upon Kellan Lutz. He plays one of the vampires in the Twilight movies. He’s not nearly on the same level as Robert, Kristen, or Taylor, but he does seem to have a following. Despite saying himself recently that he his “Oscar material,” I beg to differ and he is not ready to carry a movie by himself yet. He’s a good actor and easy on the eyes for lots of women and men, but he’s still not A-List level where he can really draw viewers to a movie. And – spoiler alert – he dies half way through the movie anyway. Then there’s no one left to sell the movie because all of the other actors are pretty unknown.

Another drawback to this movie is the huge resemblance to Predator. After Dusk They Come plays out exactly like Predator except without the guns and war. The creatures even look like Predator until you get to see them up close. It all seemed like a big rip off and was pretty much a less fun version of Predator. I mean, things are even reminiscent of Predator to the point of the woman being treated differently than the men by the creatures. I don’t get the title After Dusk They Come either because the creatures attack all the time. I’m sure either of the first two titles would have been better suited for this film.

This movie is really a miss. Being that it was completely reshot, I can’t imagine how horrible the first version was. Even though the production value of After Dusk They Come is great and the acting is decent, with a paper-thin plot and lots of stealing from other movies… It’s just a really big miss. I guess I can only really recommend it to Kellan Lutz fans.
