Kane Hodder is a well-known actor and stuntman in the horror industry, most famous for being the only stuntman to play Jason Voorhees more than once on screen. Aside from being a very successful stuntman and actor, he also is a key member of the Hollywood Ghost Hunters, investigating the paranormal with Rick McCallum and R.A. Mihailoff, along with other big names in horror.
What made Kane go into movies?
Originally Kane wanted to just go into being a stuntman in movies and never really thought about actually doing any acting. Eventually offers started coming in for him to have acting roles, such as Ed Gein, The Biker in Darkwolf, and more recently Thomas Crowley, Victor Crowley’s father in Hatchet I and II. He feels very lucky to have had the chance to start acting with real dialog.
What kinds of martial arts training has he had?
Surprisingly, Kane hasn’t had too much martial arts training. He’s only had some minor instruction in Tae Kwon Do, so he can have a believable performance on screen for combat scenes, but as he puts it, since he’s normally a bad guy, he doesn’t really need to have too much flash since his characters normally have to be defeated by the good guys ultimately.
Are there any famous people who’ve inspired him?
When he first started his career as a stuntman, Kane would always make sure he’d be home on Saturday nights so he could catch the opening sketches with Chevy Chase doing his famous pratfalls. He loved the comedic aspect behind each fall, and would try to base a lot of the stunt work on what he saw Chevy doing.
When it came to acting, he was inspired by Charlize Theron’s performance when he was working at stunt coordinator on “Monster” back in 2003. He would observe how she would get into the right frame of mind for her character and for each scene both when she was acting and doing her stunts.
Which does he prefer more, stunts or acting?
Kane has been doing stunts for 34 years, but acted for only 10. Still, he values the acting experiences he’s had. For acting there’s a different type of preparation that goes into every performance, and he enjoys the different type of challenge he gets from it. The challenge that comes with acting is a more intellectual one than what he gets from doing stunts, especially when it comes to dialog delivery. Still, his ideal role would be one that encompasses both acting and stunts.
How did he get the role of Jason for Friday the 13th Part 7?
The year before, he had been working on a movie called Prison with John Buechler doing the make-up. John liked Kane’s performance, so when John was called on to do Friday the 13th, he recommended Kane to do the stunts. Kane was brought in for a screen test, and he ended up getting the role.
How does he feel about being known as the most famous Jason?
He’s quite flattered to be so famous, and greatly appreciates all his fans. He considers himself very lucky to have gotten the role of Jason in the first place and is happy that he was asked to reprise the role multiple times.
Hollywood Ghost Hunters
What sparked his interest in ghost hunting?
Kane has always been interested in the paranormal. While working on a movie with Rick McCallum, they both found they had a similar interest, and they started the Hollywood Ghost Hunters with other actors and people in the horror movie industry. So far this has led both Kane and Rick, along with R.A. Mihailoff to be guests on Ghost Adventures investigating Pico House.
Did he have any experiences with the paranormal before HGH?
Kane never really had any run-ins with ghosts before HGH, so he’s hoping that in the future he’ll gather some memorable ones with Rick and crew. With some of the other ghost hunting shows he’s seen, he’s noticed that the hunters normally get carried away with the slightest noise, or anything that could even remotely be considered paranormal. While he does his own ghost hunting, he tries to make sure that there’s no scientific explanation for a noise or an image first, before he starts thinking along the lines of ghost activity. One famous haunted place he would like to investigate in the future is the Stanley Hotel, but not purely because of the haunting rumors, but also because it’s a really nice place to be.
Biography
How did Kane partner up with Mike Aloisi for his biography?
Mike had e-mailed him one day, saying that he thought Kane had an interesting story and that he’d like to write a biography for him. He assured Kane that he would have full control of what went into the book, which was one concern Kane had had if he were to go with writing the biography himself.
Had he considered writing a biography himself?
Right when Mike contacted him, Kane had started considering writing his own biography. He accepted Mike’s offer to write it because he felt that Mike would be thoroughly accurate and he knew he had the final say about what information actually goes into the book.
Will he ever make a film documentary about his life?
He is currently considering doing something along those lines, but details aren’t able to be disclosed just yet. Negotiations are happening however, so hopefully something will be in the works soon.
