Season of the Witch (2011)

A 14th century Crusader returns to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. A beleagured church, deeming sorcery the culprit of the plague, commands the two knights to transport an accused witch to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence. A priest, a grieving knight, a disgraced itinerant and a headstrong youth who can only dram of becoming a knight join a mission troubled by mythically hostile wilderness and fierce contention over the fate of the girl. When the embattled party arrives at the abbey, a horrific discovery jeopardizes the knight’s pledge to ensure the girl fair treatment, and pits them against an inexplicably powerful and destructive force.

Season of the Witch stars Nicolas Cage, Ron Pearlman, Claire Foy and Stephen Campbell Moore.

For “Honor is not a thing to be dismissed or forgotten.”

Season of the Witch starts slow because the story opens with our two knights as they are off on the crusades, killing without mercy and not thinking of their actions. Slowly Behmen (Cage) realizes that these actions aren’t neccessarily in the best interest of the “church”, so he and his best friend, Felson (Pearlman), abandon their service to the church and are considered desserters. I think where the movie picks up and the suspense begins to build is when the knights are comissioned by the church to take a young girl who is accused of being a witch, to the Abbey which is a 6 day journey.

The knights are accompained by a priest, a swindler, another knight of the church and a young boy who wants to become a knight himself. As they get closer to their destination, the group’s numbers begin to dewindle as one by one they are slaughtered by an unknown evil force. As the group’s numbers goes down, the suspense builds up.

There are dark and spooky thing at work – evil things, and so the second half of the movie is far better than the first. Once again, there are some great special effects done in Season of the Witch. Probably one of my favorite is the scene where the group is attack by a pack of wolves. The visual effects of the wolves was really good because it seems like they tweaked their faces to look even more vicious – almost werewolfian (if that’s a word.)

Overall, Season of the Witch, is a descent movie. Although it starts slow, it has an explosive ending.
