Fifteen years ago, one of the most influential questions in horror movie history was asked – What’s your favorite scary movie? Scream capitalized on this iconic question, and it has been used in a number of films and parodied more times than I can count. In part, the opening death scene involving Drew Barrymore helped launch Scream to be one of the most lucrative horror franchises in history.
And now Scream is back! The first installment of the soon-to-be new Scream trilogy, Scream 4, arrives in theatres two weeks from today – April 15th, 2011. In celebration of Wes Craven’s return to the hit slasher films, I hopped on the social networking site, Twitter. At one point, there were a lot of names being tossed around for actors to star in Scream 4. So I thought, “I wonder what would happen if other celebs got the call?” Then I channeled my inner Ghostface and asked a variety of celebrities the big question – What’s your favorite scary movie? This is what they had to say.
Firstly, let’s check out what actors in the horror genre had to say:
Theoriginalgata Hmmm..that’s REALLY hard..I have many. But I really dig Christine & The Original Nightmare on Elm Street. – Monique Dupree, the First Black Scream Queen
DeneenMelody My favorite SCARY movie? A lot of them never scared me. The one I LIKE best that is a bit scary would be 28 Days Later. :) – Deneen Melody, actress Song of the Shattered
JessicaCameron_ Thanks babe! Lets see……favorite is so hard. I am going to say Ginger Snaps. Classic and its Canadian :) – Jessica Cameron, actress Hell-O-Ween
CodyMBlymire texas chainsaw massacre with jessica biel. – Cody Matthew Blymire, actor Thanxgiving
LaLindsayMarie Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. — Lindsay Marie Felton, actress Scream Queens season 1 2nd runner up
Now, there were a couple other notable people in the media who responded to me. So, I want to take the time here to show you their picks for favorite scary movie. They include a star from Buffy who now produces independent films and a pop icon from the 80s. Also included in this category is a horror author, directors, and an Emmy Award Winner.
amber_benson I kind of adore Suspiria, but The Shining is #1. – Amber Benson, “Tara” Buffy The Vampire Slayer, author and producer
DeborahGibson not “horror” but nothing kept me on the edge of my seat more than Apocolypto. As a kid Poltergeist! But I had a clown puppet! – Debbie Gibson, platinum selling singer, actress Mega Python vs Gateroid
CamMcCaslandThe Exorcist probably tops my list of all time scary movies. — Cameron McCasland, director The Lashman, Emmy Award Winner
RichardDiaz My favorite scary movie would be The Exorcist with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre close behind. Both really scared me. — Richard Diaz, director Distortion
HellCometh Than you! I’m partial to anything zombie, but my favorite is—The Shining. — Todd Card, author Hell Cometh
As a big fan of professional wrestling, whether it be WWE/WWF and TNA, I decided to ask a bunch of these athletes as well. Here’s what they had to say:
theterrirunnels I don’t do scary movies!!! Okay, there is one that I have watched a “bazillion” times…Silence Of The Lambs. :) — Terri Runnels, former WWF Hardcore Champion, author
ashleymassaro11 the host japanese horrific paul london turned me onto yrs ago by far my fav. – Ashley Massaro, former WWE Diva, Playboy covergirl, and Survivor contestant
KaitlynWWE I don’t like scary movies! If I had to choose it would be 28 weeks later. Sick. – Kaitlyn, WWE NXT season 3 winner, currently on Smackdown brand
missangelafong1 The Ring. – Angela Fong, former WWE Diva
While dealing with the villainous Simon Cowell seems horrific enough, this is what some past American Idol contestants had to say.
kimcaldwell wrong Turn 2 starring me! Hahaha. – Kimberly Caldwell, American Idol 2 7th place, Wrong Turn 2, album out this April
LaBelleMusik The Shining. – Leah LaBelle, American Idol 3 12th Place
AylaBrown ah I hate scary movies. Probably the ring? That might have been the last I saw :-) I’m a wimp – Ayla Brown, American Idol season 5 Top 16, professional athlete
Even some of the Bad Girl’s gave me a response. For those of you that don’t know, The Bad Girls Club is my guilty pleasure. It’s about seven girls picked to live in a mansion, much like the Real World. Only they are all sexy, bad ass chicks. So entertaining to watch! If Ghostface ever called them, he’d regret it.
nikkiNation saw series! – Nikki Galladay, Bad Girls Club Season 6
badgirlashleyc mmmm, I like scary movies that are based on a true story. – Ashley Cheatham, Bad Girls Club Season 5
chibadgirl I love Chucky!!!! — Tiffany Davis, Bad Girls Club Season 3
There you have it! I’m surprised to see that a lot of people said The Shining and The Ring. I’m glad that a few named some of the classics like The Exorcist and Nightmare on Elm Street. But, this was just a fun way for me to ask celebrities from across the board what their answer would be to the iconic question – what’s your favorite scary movie? It’s interesting to see that even if they don’t enjoy a good scary movie all the time, certain celebries do enjoy a good horror flick at least at some point. Thank you to all who answers. Scream 4 arrives in theatres two weeks from today, April 15th.
Make sure you go see it!
