The Collector is a horror film directed by Marcus Dunstan and stars Josh Stewart, Andrea Roth and Juan Fernández.
It’s been awhile since a movie has captured my attention literally from the very beginning of the film to the end. This horror movie started with suspense and fear and it never let up.
The Collector tells the story of Arkin (Josh Stewart) who is in desperate need of some quick cash so he decides to rob his employer’s house. Arkin gets more than he bargins for when the house becomes booby trapped by a deranged killer. That killer, AKA The Collector tortures families always leaving one person alive to “collect” as some sort of temporary trophy. He traps them in a large wooden box and takes them to the next location where he does the same thing all over again.
I really liked this movie. The suspense was amazing. The traps were realistic. The movie itself was simple but not in a boring way. It was clever. The protagonist didn’t start off as the hero but was kinda forced into the role and it worked. The killer wasn’t some strong overbearing beast of a man but instead wore a simple face mask and had his traps do most of the work. I thought the movie was smart and to the point. I liked the fact that both the killer and the protagonist got their licks in. It showed balance.
While watching this movie it reminded me of the first Saw film as it had that little hint of originality that Saw had when it first came out. The director Marcus Dunstan also co-wrote The Collector and I liked the way he used different camera angles throughout some of the more suspenseful scenes. Different than most horror movies who only use high and low angles during those same kind of scenes. The Collector easily makes my list of favorite horror movies and it’s one who’s sequel The Collection is well deserved.
