So a few weeks ago I attended the Zombie Con at the Comic Vault here in Chicago. So what is a zombie con? Well if you went into this thinking that it was an actual convention, then you were rather disappointed. Although if you went into this thinking it was an event of some sorts featuring all things zombie, then you had a better time.
Zombie Con was the Comic Vault’s first zombie event featuring some makeup demonstrations, zombie related comic books on sale, a couple of comic book artists, and a few other lectures all related to the Undead.
For the most part this was a fun time with a small but consistent crowd all day long. The owner of the shop and its employees were great and kept everything going at a good pace and nothing really lagged behind. I got there just as the Zombie Chef was cooking up some cookies and trying to eat the people from the crowd rather than really instruct us at all. Typical zombies… only one thing on their minds.
I had missed the “Escape From Chicago” lecture about how to get your ass out of this city when the zombie hoard comes through. From what I hear and from what our own Coye Vega said, it was entertaining and actually useful. The guy running this show was funny, witty, and knew just what he was talking about. The lecture also contained a google map with locations of all the gun shops around the chicago area and highlights which buildings would be best.
Some examples of what to do and what not to do…
1) “Indiana is a cesspool,… stay away from it!”
2) Stay away from Wrigleyville… “who wants to be bitten by a zombie with a faux-hawk and a fallout boy t-shirt” instead of “BRAINS!” they be shouting “BROHHHH”
3) Stay away from Target, that store is “filled with douche-bags who will not hesitate to throw you at a zombie so that they can escape.”
4) info can be found at escapefromchicago.blogspot.com (site not working)
Other parts of the event included a zombie makeup tutorial by our own Freak of the Week, Colleen Jones. She did a great job of showing just how to make those nasty little cuts, bruises, and skull fractures!
There was an hourly raffle of zombie related items all day long, and a $5 raffle of the first issue of the Spiderman Comic, worth over $2000! Nice! Last but not least there were some people showing off their writing skills and doing zombie readings for the crowd.
Overall it was a fun way to spend the afternoon and if you were into zombies at all, it was worth it. Hell it was free, so even if zombie aint your thing, you should of gone over their to show your support for a great independently owned business like The Comic Vault. I hear there will be another one next year, and maybe a haunted house of some sort by them as well!
