REVIEW: The Serpenteens
The Serpenteens are a horror punk band from NYC with a particular catchy kind of sound. More along the lines of Horror Po as they refer themselves to be. This title seems to be appropriate. Although I would really let my 10 year old daughter (if I had one) listen to this album. It does have and edge to it that will satisfy most people’s cravings for pop music, while still keeping in tune with the rock and punk that they are known for. The band started out in 1995 as a side project by members Gee Grant and Mark Zap, (more affectionately know as fang Alphamayle and Bub Romero), to explore new musical concepts and ideas not really presents with the bands around at the time. They combined their love of horror movies, sci-fi weirdness and zombies to lay the foundation for what the group is today.
By combining an infinite number of influences both musically and theatrically, the band has a good repertoire of well crafted songs. In 2005 they scooped up some new zombies Frank Morin and Glen Sorino and a year later signed with Washington States’s infamous Blood and Guts Records. Now with this new CD Dead Men Walking, and a new tour on hand, The Serpenteens are on their way up the musical ladder.
The CD is jam packed with 12 tracks all of which have their signature sound of monster pop to them and all are well played and sound tremendous. With titles like “X Ray Eyes”, “Siler Bullet”, “Day of the Dead”, “Antennae”, and their most known hit “Calling all Monster Kids!” it is obvious where their inspiration come from. They are big fans of 50’s style horror and sci-fi, HP Lovecraft, and of course zombies. Most all of their tracks really give you the feel of being in one of those cheesy horror or post war era sci-fi bug eating flicks.
When you first pop in the CD their sound really comes out in the first track. More of a pop style tune that is catchy and rather upbeat. Judging by the lyrics most of the tracks here seem to have some kind of story to them.
“(Please be my) Zombie Bride” is a good track that puts you back in time to the 50’s era doo-wop type of Prom or something. It’s actually a pleasure to listen to it. Almost makes you want to be in that gymnasium checking out all of the girls in their poodle skirts, but keeping in mind from the lyrics, that it’s some kind of Stephen King prom! First thought….Back to the Future. Not sure why, but….
One of my personal favorite tracks on the CD is “All Around Me”. This one to me stands out as the best “soundtrack song” that you could come up with. It really sounds like it should be in some kind of cheesy horror movie. Catchy tune and can be placed in about any type of situation or soundtrack for almost any horror movie. Very stylish track here.
All in all if you like music that you can actually understand and can appreciate someone that can really sing, then you should check this out. The Serpenteens have almost made a new kind of retro music that is fit for a party, movie, or just chilling. If you are in a good mood and want to stay that way, then throw this sucker in. I can imagine that the concerts are jam packed with 50’s style pin-up babes, and psycho-billy studs, and horror freaks of course.
