REVIEW: Satanico Pandemonium

"Nunsploitation is a subgenre of exploitation film, which had its peak in Europe in the 1970s. These films typically involve Christian nuns living in convents during the Middle Ages. The main conflict of the story is usually of a religious or sexual nature, such as religious oppression or sexual suppression due to living in celibacy. The inquisition is another common theme. These films, although often seen as pure exploitation films, often contain criticism against religion in general and the Catholic church in particular. Indeed, some protagonist dialogue voiced feminist consciousness and rejection of their subordinated social role. Not surprisingly, many of these films were made in countries where the Catholic church is influential, such as Italy and Spain." Source
I own several movies that technically fall under the nunsploitation movie genre. This one I do believe is my 1st to watch from start to finish. I’m currently sick so excuse me in advance if my info or writing is a bit off. If you’re consider yourself a heavy catholic or you believe offensive material involving nuns and breaking their vows will send you straight to hell, then stop reading now.
Satánico Pandemonium is a Mexican Nunsploitation movie, and the Mondo Macabro release only has a Spanish with English subtitles option. The movie takes place sometime in the inquisition era and its main lead is the nun Sister Maria. Sister Maria is out helping take care of the livestock with the local Shepard boy. She steps away for a bit to go down by the lake and strange things start happening to her. The first being a naked man appearing out of nowhere.
Sister Maria becomes quite scared and runs back to the Shepard boy. She shakes things off and acts as if it was her imagination, before too long the man reappears. He claims himself to be Lucifer and begins to offer Sister Maria an apple. The apple I believe is a reference to Adam and Eve in the bible and their breaking God’s rule and eating the apple and therefore being thrown out of Eden. The apple is shown many times throughout the movie.
Sister Maria keeps seeing things and after a corny scene where she is raped by a fellow nun who turns into Lucifer, she really looses it. She was once one of the most pure nuns at the convent, but evil and madness soon step in. She herself tries to rape the young Shepard boy and to hush his screams she shanks him a few times with a knife that’s handily available on the floor. This is one of the more gory killings, even though it looks extremely fake.
Soon Sister Maria is made to think the others are aware of her sins, and Lucifer offers her a deal she can’t refuse or she’ll be pumped full of molten lead and sliced into bits like a tree grinder. She is made head nun and when they get back to the convent all the other nuns are frolicking and what definitely appears to be a lot of sinning. I am not going to spoil the shocking ending for anyone.
I believe this movie is probably one of the weaker entries in the nunsploitation genre from what I’ve read. The acting is mediocre sometimes particularly the part of Lucifer. This is probably a good starting entry into the nunsploitation genre particularly since the violence and gore are not over abused. However the nudity is sub par and mostly involves Sister Maria’s tiny tits. The plot for the movie is relatively easy to follow, but I have a pretty good feeling there’s several undertones in the plot and most definitely with the almost oxy moron-ish ending.
Overall I’m going to say this is definitely a rent, particularly if you’re looking for an entry level nunsploitation flick. However if you’re looking for something utterly filthy, gory, with a lot of nudity, and full blown nun-fucking, you’ll probably want to do a bit of research to find something to suit your taste/tasteless-ness. ![]()
