HorrorSociety intro REVIEW: Camp Death

Ok, so I got this little DVD in the mail the other day, from our brothers to the north in Canada. In comes Lick a Frog Productions newest hit…..Camp Death.

Camp Death is about a group of filmmakers that are making your classic slasher flick in the middle of the woods at an abandoned summer camp, trying to keep to the traditions of slashers. So far so good right? Well the acting gets a little too real for the cast and the crew, as well as some unsuspecting traveling people on the highway. And all hell and gore breaks loose.

That is the initial plot-line and you know what, it doesn’t get any different than that…butt that’s OK. It’s a fucking slasher flick. There just needs to be some blood and gore, maybe some nudity, and of course sex! You can’t have a slasher film without the old premise of sex =violence and death right.

HorrorSociety appetizers REVIEW: Camp Death

Well this is a well put together DVD with decent graphics for the menus and the navigation actually works. Trust me there have been some of them that never seem to work. Along with graphics there is the usual bevy of extras and commentary tracks from the director and such. With this one you get a bonus little drinking game with it. Apparently the cast and the crew, and what seems like the entire country of Canada like to drink. And this DVD has a bit of a game to go along with that theme. Pretty fun when you have nothing bettor to do with your 39-minutes. There is also a stills gallery with some graphic and bloody pics for you too enjoy. Of course there is a bit more to the DVD extras, but I will get into that later.

HorrorSociety maincourse REVIEW: Camp Death

This movie all in all is a very good first time effort from Lick a Frog productions and first time director Shaun Tisdale. They have put together a good little slasher flick that represents good old American films of the 80’s very well. It really does feel like an older hack em up flick and it looks that way too. The acting is on par for the situation. I mean some of it really could be better, but then again given the plot…you don’t really need a Shakespeare trained actor to pull of some killing. For what the movie is about, the characters are believable and the movie flows well as it goes on. Now it’s only about 40 minutes long, but the action is a tad fast so the movie seems longer. And to get out what the director needed, 39min was plenty.

Now they must be horny, drunk, and generally pissed off in Canada or something. I did notice the movie had a lot of profanity, sex, and violence in it. For that I give it a thumbs up!

No really they seemed to say Fuck a lot in this. A whole lot…so much so that there is the drinking game on the DVD that goes along with this idea. Every time someone says fuck in the movie, you take a drink. Nice idea, but I can’t hold my liquor that well, cuz…fuck is said about 20 times in the first 30 seconds. AHAHA

But back to the movie. I liked this one. Its fun and it’s a good effort for Shaun, and I’m sure that he has more of them in the near future. He show effective and rather creative camera angles thought the movie to add to the suspense factor of the film. Various scenes were shot from multiple and odd angles and really gave you the feeling that you were part of the action. Good job for someone with no training in film school. So here come the lesbians…yeah!! Yeah, the first scene in the movie gears you up for the rest of it by letting you n on a little action from a couple of chicks. Nothing better to grab your attention and keep you watching for more. But this is not just for the shock factor either. It really plays on the "sex is death" role that most slasher films are based upon. Once again, good job sticking to the roots but putting a good spin on the boring old tale.

HorrorSociety dessert REVIEW: Camp Death

Here is the part of the new style review that I’m going to say what the best part of the DVD or movie was. Everyone likes desserts right!

So one of the best parts was the Camp Death story that the director himself tells on a section of the DVD. His audio account of how he got into this and what happens along the way was refreshing and rather daring on his part as well. Hearing this in some sections almost had me feeling sorry for him, and then in other sections being jealous of him too. He tells how it’s a long and sometimes difficult process shooting and independent movie from start to finish. Basically taking on all the roles yourself and having to deal with things that you are not ready or not even willing to take on, but have to for the sake of your art! This is a good take on the state of indie films and you should go and buy this DVD and check out that section before you watch the movie. You might appreciate it more!

Oh yeah, I cant forget about the head in the mirror scene…yep its what you think it is!!

Good job!!

9/10 skulls (-1 for being a little dark)
