Review: Perfect Creature

creatureReview by BigBadWolfBoy

So the title card comes up, and it’s some sort of expository hooey about a world ‘not unlike our own’ (groan) and an advanced species of Homo Sapiens known as ‘The Brotherhood’ (double groan), and I say to myself, “Here we go again with the Capitalizing Of Titles So That We Know When Something Is Important“. I start thinking that I will be a new species known as The Reviewer working for an entity known as The Internet. And one day a Chosen One will arise, known as He/She/Person/Three-Toed Sloth Who Doesn’t Give A Good Goddamn, and this Chosen One will defeat The Reviewer and topple The Internet once and for all! While being stoic and, if male, wearing a priestly smock or, if female, some tight and shiny leather. The Three-Toed Sloth would, I am fully convinced, be wearing a pantsuit fashioned out of twigs and moss. But it would still be quite a stoic Three-Toed Sloth. Or something. Did I mention I was groaning?

Turns out I groaned too soon. Perfect Creature is a more than decent action/horror romp that reminded me of the time that Underworld and Children of Men were having a wrestling match and accidently tumbled into Jeff Goldblum’s teleporter from The Fly.

BORN Synopsis

Friday December 28th 2007, 8:12 am by DrGore

bornposterA young couple. A quaint English village. A deadly secret.

This is the world of Born. Combining elements of The Sixth Sense, The Wicker Man, Rosemary’s Baby, and Straw Dogs, Born tells the story of a couple who thought they had found the perfect place to start a family and pursue their professional dreams, only to find themselves caught in a terrifying supernatural plot.

Joe and Vanessa thought they had everything. They’ve settled in an idyllic English town that will be perfect for both raising their unborn child and for Joe to build his dream claymation workshop. From the local hospitality to the rich red molding clay found in the town quarry, it would seem they’ve settled in paradise. But something isn’t quite right. The locals are almost too friendly, and while using the clay Joe begins to have eerie visions of a young girl’s murder. Gradually, the story being told in his animation foreshadows the fate of Joe and Vanessa, leading Born to a terrifying conclusion that will shock audiences, leaving them breathless.

Harry Manfredini Interview

Wednesday December 26th 2007, 4:43 pm by BrianK

meHarry Manfredini: Jason’s Musical Master (and so much more!) Interview by Brian Kirst.

The incredibly talented Harry Manfredini will always be known as the man who created the shockingly famous Friday the 13th theme. But, Manfredini has done so much more, musically, than just "kill, kill" - he has actually helped create the atmosphere for many of your Halloween favorites. Besides, scoring projects such as WishMaster, the House series, Horror Show and Deep Star 6 - Manfredini is also a Chicago native. Since Horror Society has its roots in Chicago -I thought it would be fun to quiz the friendly Manfredini about his Windy City roots and the enduring legacy of his Friday the 13th association.

Brian: You’re a Chicago guy! Where did you grow up in Chicago?

Harry: I grew up on the near north side. I went to St. Teresa’s and De Paul Academy. So - Seminary Avenue between Armitage and Fullerton.

Brian: Do you have any favorite places that you must hit when you return for a visit?

Harry: I don’t get back as much as I would like. Well, first of all, I have to have a Lou Malnotti’s pizza, as soon as possible. Usually my family fills in all the rest of the food that I crave. I love to go downtown. The Art Institute is always at the top of the list. Orchestra Hall if there are concerts going on at the time. Wrigley Field if that is possible. Always check out the small theater schedules, and who is playing in town.

Brian: Chicago has such a great music scene. Are you more of a blues or jazz guy? (Yippy, Green Mill!!)

Harry: I have not been part of the Chicago Music scene for so long; I am a bit out of the loop. Pun intended. What I can tell you is that when I was lived there THE BIRD HOUSE was my absolute favorite. Major jazz acts were there in a setting where there was an aisle which divided the alcohol from the non-alcohol section, so teens were able to go and listen. I was there a lot. - Great Burgers and soda. And of course great, great jazz. What a wonderful idea.

Brian: Do you find there is any of a Chicago influence in your film scoring work? Or do just influenced by the esthetics of each particular project and go where it leads you?

Harry: I think it’s more of each particular assignment touching me in a certain way that influences my music. I think my growing up in Chicago, and the mindset of the city has roots in my personality.

Brian: What has been your favorite scoring experience?

Harry: That is almost impossible to answer. Each project has its own special and enjoyable aspects. Sometimes it’s the actual film itself, (A Gun, A Car, A Blonde) or the chance to have a huge orchestra, (DeepStar 6, Timemaster) or the opportunity to create an interesting sound and theme for a character, (a baby pterodactyl in House 2, a worm dog,) or sometimes, to look at from a completely monetary point of view, it is just the reality of a nice paycheck and some good residuals.

Brian: Friday the 13th’s Sean Cunningham calls you an equipment junkie. What is your favorite piece of equipment - the one that helps you put the most into your musical scores?

Harry: Ha-Ha! Well I don’t know if that is true. I am not really a junkie. I do strive to get the best sound I can, and I am always looking for new sounds. So if that is an equipment junkie, then I guess it is true. But I am not at all a "techie". I think of equipment junkies as guys who know every keyboard, and all the different versions of all sorts of software, and know how to run everything and know all the makes of instruments, old and new. I am not at all that. I used to have a whole lot of equipment, but now I have honed it down to just a few pieces of gear, and hope to even get it down more in the future.

Brian: Your association with Friday the 13th must be both a blessing and a curse. What is the best thing about being involved with the series and what is the worst?

Harry: This is of course true. It has and continues to be a bit of a double edged sword. On the positive side, it of course has created a career. I have met and continue to meet so many wonderful people, and have opportunities at so many films as a result. The negative side is of course that it pigeon holes me to a great extent. Some people think it is all I can do, but I have created so many different scores in different styles, but the sword still cuts. Those who know and understand and realize the contribution of that score to that film, and that I am more than able to create a very memorable and effective score for any film assignment.

Zombie Town

Wednesday December 26th 2007, 11:50 am by BrianK

ztZombie Town. 2007. MTI Video. Reviewed by Brian Kirst

"We’ve got to go get some zombie grandmothers before this thing gets out of hand!" - Randy

Residing in the town of Otis is rather boring - that is until the humor laced, limb splattering Zombie invasion occurs. Then it is up to slacking, inept local mechanic Jake La Fond and his ex-girlfriend, scientific Alex, to save the day. A fairly typical set-up, one might suppose.

ztFortunately, director-writer Damon LeMay shows true craft and wit by setting this picture somewhat apart from the rest of the undead cinematic hordes. Here, the zombie masses are created by a crawling parasitic slug that burrows into the flesh, eventually attaching itself to the spine and controlling its hungry victims internally. With that in mind, Zombie Town ultimately plays out like a refreshing combination of old school Sci Fi- monster flicks like the original The Blob and contemporary gut crunchers like the Spierig Brothers’ Undead.

As for the giggle quotient - LeMay’s humor shows most strongly in a highly original bingo hall invasion. This makes the primary antagonists, for the film’s mid-portion, a bunch of elderly women. They savagely attack sons, daughters and grandchildren (one of them in the middle of a backseat romp at a warehouse party) and bring out the true infestation of Otis.

ztLeMay’s cast grandly underplays the material providing a charm and savvy friendliness that is enjoyably endearing. Adam Hose gives his Jake a likeable easy going quality and Brynn Lucas matches him well with a spark and sass as the intellectual, lovelorn Alex. Dennis LeMoine nicely softens comic relief Randy’s more sarcastic moments and Jon Norman Schneider also connects with an honest fear and emotional honesty as the slightly bumbling Billy.

Of course, there is plenty of intestine slapping, leg chomping, neck chewing goriness on hand. Some of the tensest moments being when a young partygoer’s leg is lobbed off with a chain saw to save him from zombie-hood and when the shaky Billy fights for his life under a collapsed structure of scaffolding.

LeMay also scores with a creative, water soaked ending. Even with his limited budget, he is able to create a scene reminiscent of the fluid final passages in Irwin Allen’s Earthquake - proving that for Zombie Town, LeMay truly deserves high, slightly salt stained, marks and many happily bloody hand claps - provided by arms severed at the elbows, of course!

Meet Clive Barker in Chicago

Monday December 24th 2007, 12:17 pm by HalloweenShape31

If you’re a movie buff who lives in Chicago, then you’ve undoubtedly heard of the Music Box Theatre, one of the Windy City’s most beloved art house theaters, where they not only show great new independent films, but also cult classics like midnight shows of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, FRIDAY THE 13TH, THE LOST BOYS, PREDATOR, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, and tons more including of course, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. They also show great classics for weekend matinees like GREASE sing-alongs, and John Wayne greats like RIO BRAVO and THE SEARCHERS. They even showed the new BLADE RUNNER: FINAL CUT for a week.

For the last three Octobers, the theater has also hosted a 24-hour horror movie marathon called "The Music Box Massacre," this year having kick ass writer/director Fred Dekker (NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, MONSTER SQUAD) in the house to talk shop on his criminally underrated career.

Anywho, I’ll cut to the chase. On January 12, the Music Box will be having a midnight show of HELLRAISER, and Clive Barker will be live in person to chit chat about the film and any other things fans would like to bring up. I’m sure he’ll also have a table set up for autographs and such. So if you’re a big HELLRAISER fan or dig Barker’s incredibly imaginative work, be sure to save the date!

More info on the Music Box Theatre and reserved tickets can be found at: http://www.musicboxtheatre.com/

Upload your movies to Indiemaverick

Saturday December 22nd 2007, 10:35 am by DrGore

logoMain

Revolutionary new website www.indiemaverick.net launches to bring filmmakers and investors together. “If Indiemaverick.net was around earlier, Robert Rodriguez would not have had to offer his body for medical experiments to raise the $7000 he needed to make El Mariachi which went on to make $2 million at the box office.

He could have just uploaded his script and reel to our site, sat back and waited for the money to pour in,” says creator Shane T. Hall.

“We at indiemaverick.net realised that thanks to new technologies the costs of filmmaking were dropping but there were few avenues to raise budgets of less than $1.5 million US. If you were a budding director such as Kevin Smith (Clerks) or Jim Jarmusch (Stranger than Paradise) looking to raise $50k to make your low budget feature the only options you had were friends, family or credit cards.”

“Everyone has a home editing system and access to a camera now. It’s a filmmaking revolution but the traditional ways of getting a film made haven’t changed to accommodate this,” Hall says. “You still need to raise a million dollars through a studio, production company or government body. Indiemaverick.net is looking to give those people left out of the usual funding avenues a way of raising their budget.”

So how does it work?
Filmmakers provide their script, budget, poster and links to any previous films etc up on the website. Investors search for projects they are interested in, read the scripts, watch the previous films. When they find one they like they invest for as little as $25USD. Once the filmmakers reach their desired budget their monies are released and they go into production on their film. All profits the film makes are split 70 percent (investors) and 30 percent (producers). Indiemaverick.net takes no profit from the sale of the film. Filmmakers have total creative control over their project and can sell it wherever and to whomever they want.

Indiemaverick.net does reserve the right to offer the film for download from the site once the film has completed any cinema or DVD run. Every investor receives a limited edition DVD of the film.

Indie Maverick launched on the 17th of December 2007.

Indiemaverick.net allows filmmakers to raise their budgets from the world community without any studio or production company interference. They will always retain total creative control over their film. They retain complete ownership of their film.

Indiemaverick.net gives the general public the ability to choose which films are actually going to be made, get a free ltd edition DVD of the film they invest in and then if successful share in the profits. Films like The Blair Witch Project and Clerks have made huge profits even though they were made for under $40 000.

“Investors can also be seen to champion a film or filmmaker at the beginning of their career,” Hall says. “Imagine all the bar room stories you can tell about the time you invested in this film called Reservoir Dogs by this guy called Tarantino and then pull out your limited edition copy signed by the director.”

The Blair Witch Project was a film that was produced for $28 000 and made for $248million at the box office. If Joe Average invested $25USD in the film his return would have been huge.

The site was created by filmmaker Shane T. Hall.

“The cost of making films are dropping but there is no funding model for filmmakers who want to make a feature film for $50 or $100K. I thought I would bring the world’s finances to these filmmakers, so I created Indiemaverick.net to help these filmmakers realise their dreams.”

Sweeney Todd Published

Friday December 21st 2007, 1:34 pm by DrGore

The notorious career of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, has been endlessly retold. But this is the first time the original tale has been reprinted since it was serialized in The People’s Periodical in 1846-47.

A sensational story of murder and pie-making, Sweeney Todd is a classic of British horror writing, widely adapted in print and on stage, most famously by Stephen Sondheim, whose unlikely "musical thriller" won eight Tony awards. This edition offers the original story with all its atmospheric Victorian trimmings.

The story of Todd’s murderous partnership with pie-maker Margery Lovett–at once inconceivably unpalatable and undeniably compelling–has subsequently set the table for a seemingly endless series of successful dramatic adaptations, popular songs and ballads, novellas, radio plays, graphic novels, ballets, films, and musicals. Both gleeful and ghoulish, the original tale of Sweeney Todd, first published under the title The String of Pearls, combines the story of Todd’s grisly method of robbing and dispatching his victims–by way of Mrs. Lovett’s meat pies–with a romantic sub-plot involving deception, disguise, and detective work, set against the backdrop of London’s dark and unsavory streets.

Editor Robert Mack ‘fleshes’ out the story with a fascinating introduction touching on the origins of the tale, the growth of the legend, and a history of its many retellings. Mack also includes explanatory notes that point out interesting aspects, plus a full chronology of the many versions of Sweeney Todd.

Since Sweeney Todd first entered the public imagination in the mid-nineteenth-century, his exploits have chilled and fascinated audiences around the world. This new edition allows modern readers to savor the ghastly original in all its gruesome glory.

Review: Mr. Halloween

Friday December 21st 2007, 12:55 am by BigBadWolfBoy

mrhalloweenReview by BigBadWolfBoy

Reportedly made for under ten thousand dollars, Mr. Halloween tells us the story of a small town with a problem. The town is Sauquoit, New York. The problem? As one of the characters so succinctly states about halfway into this nearly two hour marathon, “…our town has more missing kids than any other town in the nation.” Cuz the most Los Angeles can have is what? Twenty or so?

Well, we’ll disregard facts here. This is, after all, a low-budget horror movie. A low-budget horror movie about a creepy man who runs a haunted house in his backyard every year. Okay, not so much a haunted house as a haunted garage. It’s not so big, you see. But the characters in the movie comment on that, at least, and explain to each other in an expository way that the draw isn’t the size but the alleged fact that the creepy guy (Bill Loomis playing a guy called…uh…Bill Loomis) uses actual body parts to gussie up his haunted garage-house!

Kids go to investigate. Bad things happen to them. Other kids look at Bill Loomis as they walk past his house. Bill Loomis follows them home…and bad things happen to them. A man decides to phone his congressman and complain about his missing child…and bad things happen to him.

Backwoods Bloodbath

Thursday December 20th 2007, 11:15 am by DrGore

Rex2

“Backwoods Bloodbath” is an old school horror-gore flick about six friends who take a road trip to a back country town where a local legend has been feeding off the population for decades, only to find themselves becoming the latest items on the creature’s menu.

This Midwest massacre is completed & currently on the film festival circuit, having been nomiated for:
BEST SCREENPLAY at the TERROR FILM FESTIVAL,
WINNER of BEST FEATURE RUNNER-UP at the FULL MOON HORROR FILM FESTIVAL, & nominated for
BEST FEATURE at the IT CAME FROM LAKE MICHIGAN HORROR & SCI-FI FILM FESTIVAL.

‘Backwoods Bloodbath’ (click the title for the trailer) will premiere in New York City in late Feb./early March.

BACKWOODS BLOODBATH-from the director:

When you tell people you’re going to shoot a 90 page feature film in 11 days with no budget, everyone looks at you thinking the same thing: ‘you’re out of your fucking mind.’ Backwoods Bloodbath was made possible with a combination of creativity & endurance.

Sleepless nights were a norm around set. McDonalds for breakfast & lunch, with the occasionally cheese brick (not kidding) or Jack’s frozen pizza in between. The cabin we filmed in was owned by my friend from college & when we weren’t shooting there, the crew was literally staying there (We joke that when the cabin owner in the film says that the kids will have heat & running water that it’s not true, because we only really had that for half the time we were shooting). The shredded deer prop was supplied by my father’s friend who is a butcher—I had to drive with it for 4 hours in the car up north. Etc, etc.

It was a hail-Mary production & a race to beat the snowfall that somehow got filmed, eeked our way through post production, and is somehow competing in the film festival circuit.

The film’s saviors were the high definition camera, our ‘borrowed’ lights from the local film school (which we weren’t attending), a competent cinematographer, die hard physical FX goons that will make anything, and an assorted array of up & coming young actors plucked from various theater programs around the state; as well as a couple from commercial & tv work.

SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT “BACKWOODS BLOODBATH”!

Poughkeepsie Tapes Pictures

Thursday December 20th 2007, 12:53 am by DrGore

We just got a bunch of pictures from the new and still not released yet "The Poughkeepsie Tapes" from MGM Studios. Check out the plot synopsis, pictures, and links to the other stories on the trailers of the flick below.

SYNOPSIS:
In 2001, police in Poughkeepsie New York made a shocking discovery—ten bodies buried in the backyard of a residential house.  Astonishingly, that was only the beginning.

Inside the home, police uncovered over 800 neatly organized videotapes detailing the exploits of one man’s decade-long crime spree.  The most disturbing part of the find, was that the killer had filmed all of the footage himself—from his first moments stalking his victims to their last seconds alive.

THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES examines the homicides—incorporating interviews from criminal experts, testimony from the only victim ever rescued alive, and chilling footage shot from the killer’s own camera.  All of which document the twisted path of a serial killer as never before.

Beginning in 1988, a wave of missing person reports and unsolved murders from New York to Pennsylvania, began to alarm law enforcement officials.  Many of the strange disappearances and dead victims held similarities.  Soon the authorities realized they were dealing with a serial killer.  The hunt to identify and capture the killer was layered with troubling facts and haunting events, eventually ending at the house where the tapes were found.   Unfortunately, the discovery left more questions than answers.  Did the killer leave the tapes intentionally? Do the tapes hold hidden clues? Is he still active?

This film dares to show what has never been presented to the public before—the evidence, the puzzle, and the footage of THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES.

REVIEW: Spilt Milk

Thursday December 20th 2007, 12:26 am by DrGore

spilmil

Review by AngryPrincess

Your grand mom probably said to you the same as mine as I was growing up "Don’t cry over spilt milk!" Usually she’d say it when I would have done something wrong and was terrified of getting trouble or just plain upset over whatever. Tiffany Shepis stars in this tale of a woman who is slowly losing her mind, or is it a ghost that is preying on her raw emotions after a very traumatic experience that would haunt any rational female?

You will need to see it up close and personal to make your own judgment or decision. I liked Spilt Milk’s build up to an ending I didn’t really expect, it was a nice change from some of the disc’s I’ve had to suffer thru. As you watch the day unfold flashbacks included, you witness subtle clues to what is going on. Shepis was great in this and her scene in the kitchen when she breaks down, her emotions were fantastic and thoroughly believable. Kevin MacDonald and Woody Bavota have a sure fire winner in Spilt Milk!

13 Hours in a Warehouse

Wednesday December 19th 2007, 8:57 am by DrGore

1313 Hours in a Warehouse spins the thrilling tale of five baddies who spend the night hiding out in an abandoned warehouse that was once used as a film studio. But as they settle themselves in, strange numbers begin to appear everywhere, and as their hostage escapes, and a rat in their ranks threatens their plans, coupled with the discovery of what films were actually filmed in the warehouse, the five thieves find they have a bigger problem…they are not alone in the warehouse.

13 Hours in a Warehouse is written, produced and directed by Dav Kaufman, who has been involved in the entertainment industry for almost 15 years. He is a critically acclaimed novelist with Lake Desire (Crotalus Publishing, 2003) in which he has been called “a novelist of considerable and original talent” –Midwest Book Review. While living and working in the film industry in Los Angeles, he produced several other films, and worked in key crew positions in others. Most of his work was through UCLA’s prestigious film school. Kaufman is also known as the founder of Rise Media and the hit festival, the Wild River Music, Comedy & Film Festival held in St. Paul September 6-10, 2006. The diverse festival featured over thirty music acts including Al Green as the music headliner.

The Make-up department head for 13 Hours in a Warehouse, Crist Ballas, has been working as a make-up designer for the film and television industry for over 25 years.
