Independent Spirit Awards
Looks like the the Independent Spirt Award nominees are in and although this is not really horror related, it does deserve some attention. There are several movies here that I personally have seen and would love for them to win. Bubble was one of the most original and moving films I have seen in a while and the director broke ground for releasing the movie in theaters and on DVD at the same time.
The Spirit Awards celebrate indie movies, original content and ideas by showing that there is more than just big names and big money in the film industry.
The Independent Spirit Awards (currently in its 22nd year) will be held on February 24, and broadcasted live on IFC. Check out the full list of nominees below….

Subject 87
The surreal, haunting thriller, SUBJECT 87 is wrapping production soon. It will be shown at the Hoboken International Film Festival in June 2007, amongst other screenings before.
SUBJECT 87 illustrates a world almost 200 years in the future, however one not too much unlike our own. Mankind had been wiped out by a chemical warfare mishap, and only a group of children had survived. The last five generations have been spent re-learning the technology and ways of the world and society. However, they were able to discover a few new interesting things of their own, such as the means to rebuild and reanimate those that had died before the man-made apocalypse.
Experiments are conducted on the re-animated humans in order to learn why mankind had destroyed itself. But…the self-appointed leader of the world has more sinister ideas with the subjects, rather than just for study……

The Host Trailer
The talk of the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival, "The Host," the latest film from critically acclaimed visionary director Bong Joon-ho, has already garnered a substantial amount of international buzz.
Utilizing state-of-the-art special effects courtesy of a creative partnership between Weta Workshop ("King Kong," "The Lord of the Rings") and The Orphanage ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," "Sin City"), "The Host" is equal parts creature-feature thrill ride and poignant human drama.

Desolation
Desolation, is a new horror film written and directed by Krist Rufty (the Cutting Room) and produced by Kevin Woods (Survival, Buy Sell Kill). Now in pre- production phase this one looks like a good splatter flick. Enough blood and gore to fill most horror freaks needs, but with a good cast and crew behind the scenes making sure it has some direction as well.
The trailer on their myspace page looks wonderful and it serves more purpose than just a sneek preview of the film. It serves as a PR tool to showcase the production teams talent and to help grab the attention of potential investors so they can finish. Call it a fundraiser of sorts, but this is a great idea for Indie filmmakers to get more of their work out there for investors and the fans.

NOTLD Re-Cut
Just recieved this in my inbox about a family friendly re-edit of the horror classic Night of the Living Dead. Interesting idea behind this and the creators of the website Cruxy are featuring this video for download. Looks like Dean Lachiusa from the site www.Neo-Cine.com has re-edited the open source classic for a more friendly viewing version by taking out the scenes of violence and altering the storyline a bit.
Every sequence has been re-framed and digitally-composed with hand-held camera motion, new perspective and special effects. - "Dean Lachiusa"
I have not seen this yet, but I might fork over the incredibaly low $2.50 to check this out. I have heard of amny re-cuts and re-dos of the classic but this is definatley a first for me. Ive never heard of a family friendly zombie movie!

Dreadful Review
We have a new review of an indie flick called Dreadful. This one is from One Eye View Productions based out of Canton Ohio.
Dreadful is more of a compilation of shorts the team has done over the years more than a feature film itself. The main focus of the DVD is their new film Dreadful. Take the Passion of Christ and mix in a little bit of new generation horror and you got yourself an experiment in horror film making.

Zombies on a Plane
Alright, if snakes were not enough for you and you need to see more carnage on a plane, well then how about some zombies. Yep, Zombies on a Plane. More specifically, Plane Dead.
Here is the story of a renegade scientist on the run from the CIA is traveling on a routine flight from LA to Paris. The plane runs into a thunderstorm which happens to be so violent that the turbulence from the storm breaks apart the coffin that he has smuggled on board. Of course that coffin is hiding the body of a virus laden dead guy or something. Then of course all hell breaks loose and hence, zombies on a plane……
